This volume provides twelve essays on various aspects of Avicenna's philosophical and scientific contributions, approaching these topics from philological, historical and philosohical methodologies. The work is conceptually divided into four sections: (1) methodology, (2) natural philosophy and the exact sciences, (3) theology and metaphysics and (4) Avicenna's heritage. The First section provides considerations for distinguishing genuine from pseudo Avicennan works. The second section deals with topics encountered in Avicenna's physics, psychology, mathematics and medical theories. The third section treats issues ranging from the theological sources for Avicenna's proof for the existence of God and God's knowledge of particulars to the place of puzzles in Avicenna's Metaphysics as well as the relation of form and matter in Avicenna's thought. The final section considers Avicenna's historical influence on later thinkers such as al-Ghazali as well as his subsequent influence in Persia.
Islam and assisted reproductive technologies

Christianity and other religions -- Iberian Peninsula -- Islam -- History -- Congresses
2018,2019
This collection takes a new approach to understanding religious
plurality in the Iberian Peninsula and its Mediterranean and
northern European contexts. Focusing on polemics-works that attack
or refute the beliefs of religious Others-this volume aims to
challenge the problematic characterization of Iberian Jews,
Muslims, and Christians as homogeneous groups.
From the high Middle Ages to the end of the seventeenth century,
Christian efforts to convert groups of Jews and Muslims, Muslim
efforts to convert Christians and Jews, and the defensive efforts
of these communities to keep their members within the faiths led to
the production of numerous polemics. This volume brings together a
wide variety of case studies that expose how the current
historiographical focus on the three religious communities as
allegedly homogeneous groups obscures the diversity within the
Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities as well as the growing
ranks of skeptics and outright unbelievers.
Featuring contributions from a range of academic disciplines,
this paradigm-shifting book sheds new light on the cultural and
intellectual dynamics of the conflicts that marked relations among
these religious communities in the Iberian Peninsula and
beyond.
In addition to the editors, the contributors are Antoni Biosca i
Bas, Thomas E. Burman, Mònica Colominas Aparicio, John Dagenais,
Óscar de la Cruz, Borja Franco Llopis, Linda G. Jones, Daniel J.
Lasker, Davide Scotto, Teresa Soto, Ryan Szpiech, Pieter Sjoerd van
Koningsveld, and Carsten Wilke.
Science and Religion
2012
Science and Religion is a record of the 2009 Building Bridges seminar, a dialogue between leading Christian and Muslim scholars convened annually by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The essays in this volume explore how both faith traditions have approached the interface between science and religion and throw light on the ongoing challenges posed by this issue today. The volume includes a selection of relevant texts together with commentary that illuminates the scriptures, the ideas of key religious thinkers, and also the legacy of Charles Darwin.
Christianity, Islam, and Nationalism in Indonesia
2005
Although over eighty percent of the country is Muslim, Indonesia is marked by an extraordinary diversity in language, ancestry, culture, religion and ways of life. This book focuses on the Christian Dani of West Papua, providing a social and ethnographic history of the most important indigenous population in the troubled province. It presents a fascinating overview of the Dani’s conversion to Christianity, examining the social, religious and political uses to which they have put their new religion. Based on independent research carried out over many years among the Dani people, the book provides an abundance of new material on religious and political events in West Papua. Underlining the heart of Christian-Muslim rivalries, the book questions the fate of religion in late-modern times.

Christianity and other religions -- Islam
2012,2006
It is crucial today to understand how religions can exist harmoniously in a shared environment, whether local or global. A reasoned approach to this question was sought by participants at a stimulating conference of the International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR) in a predominantly Muslim country, Indonesia. Themes treated include the relation between theoretical approaches and religious viewpoints, practical problems and conflict resolution at the local level, and religious education with special reference to the role of Muslim schools (pesantren) in Indonesia.
