Monetary reform under the Sufyanids: the papyrological evidence
2021
For the past fifty years, there has been a debate over whether the Umayyad caliph Muʿāwiya introduced a short-lived gold coinage in Syria. After reappraising the literary evidence, this study argues that an enigmatic phrase in a papyrus from this period constitutes evidence for state enforcement of the circulation of a new kind of gold coinage issued under Muʿāwiya. A die-study of the extant specimens of a peculiar imitation of Byzantine gold which has had its crosses effaced, and has been attributed to Muʿāwiya on the basis of the testimony of literary sources, confirms them to be the result of a large-scale, albeit ultimately unsuccessful, initiative. This demonstrates that, in addition to the east, there also existed a separate drive towards an expansion of the money supply in Syria-Egypt during the latter half of Muʿāwiya's caliphate, a development which testifies to a relatively substantial programme of state-building by the caliph.

A new Abbasid dirham type from al-Shāsh
2019
A new type of Abbasid dirham from Central Asia, with highly unusual iconography, has recently been discovered. It was minted in the turbulent year 195 H / 810-11 AD. The iconography of the coin is compared with examples from the art of the pre-Islamic and early Islamic periods in the lands of the caliphate, and possible interpretations are discussed.

An Abbasid Fals from Cilicia Overstruck on a Roman Maiorina
2019
The use of Byzantine copper coins as flans for pre-reform issues of the early Islamic period is well-known. Also, overstrikes on Late Roman antoniniani and folles, especially by the earliest purely Islamic fulus of 'Abd al-Malik (685-705), have already attracted some attention. Here, however, a much rarer phenomenon will be discussed, namely the overstrike of an Abbasid fals on a maiorina of the late fourth century AD.

Islamic Coins and Their Values Volume 2
2018
This book is the second volume of an illustrated price guide to Islamic coins; the first volume was published in 2015. The Islamic market has long been hampered by two things: the lack of reliable information regarding values due to the historic volatility of auction prices for Islamic coins, and the lack of general reference works with illustrations. This book is an attempt to remedy both these problems. It is intended as an introductory guide, aimed at the general collector; suggestions for further reading are given throughout the book.
Islamic Coins and Their Values Volume 1

Part 1 of a detailed reference work on Islamic coins. This first volume focuses on the coins of the mediaeval period from the beginnings of Islam up to the 10th century AH/16th century AD.
