Crescenzo Del Monte, jodìo romano: A Jewish-Roman Poet and Linguist in Fascist Italy
The poetry and socio-linguistic scholarship of Crescenzo Del Monte (Rome, 1868-1935) represent an important contribution to the understanding and preservation of Giudaico-Romanesco, the dialect of the Jews of Rome. Del Monte's assertion that Giudaico-Romanesco represents the closest living descendent of the spoken language of Ancient Rome and the medieval Italian vernacular of Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio, came into irreconcilable conflict with the anti-Semitic, xenophobic, and dialectophobic policies of the regime as the Fascists took control of Italy and exercised ever stricter control over cultural production. Del Monte's work remains fundamental to an understanding of the culture and language of the Jews of Rome in the decades leading up to and following their political emancipation.
The Linguistic Landscape of the Mediterranean : French and Italian coastal cities
\"This book explores the Linguistic Landscapes of ten French and Italian Mediterranean coastal cities, analysing the ways in which the public space is managed by different individuals and groups for a range of purposes. Engaging with scholarship on border studies, insularity, peripherality, cosmopolitanism, and social representations, Blackwood and Tufi test the ways in which research beyond sociolinguistics can meaningfully inform Linguistic Landscape studies. The authors privilege four specific perspectives, namely the visibility of national languages, the claiming of space for regional languages and dialects, the creation of transnational spaces for migrant languages, and the role of English in cosmopolitan place-making. Drawing on their own data from along the Mediterranean shoreline, Blackwood and Tufi provide the first in-depth and cross-referenced examination of written language use in the public space in Perpignan, Trieste, Nice, Monaco, Genoa, Palermo, Cagliari, Ajaccio, Marseilles, and Naples\"-- Provided by publisher.
Giovanni Battista Raimondi's Travel in the Middle East: A Case of Sixteenth-Century Portuguese-Italian Interference
The paper publishes the inedited document Miscellanea Medicea 719, ins. 56, n. 1 of Florence State Archive, containing the account of a journey by land from Hormuz to Venice, dated to 1575, preceded by a brief critical introduction. 19th century Italian historiography has attributed the account to Giovanni Battista Raimondi (1536 ca.-1614), scientific director of the Typographia Medicea (Rome 1584). Raimondi has been considered also as the author of the travel, describing his experience in the first person (plural). This paper argues, on linguistic and text-critical grounds, that Raimondi did not make such a travel, nor did he compose the account, but merely copied the document in the context of the preparation of a mission to Egypt and Persia of Giovanni Battista Vecchietti, who left to Alexandria in 1584, as a papal envoy.

The Language of Power: Casini and Bancheri's In-Depth Analysis of Italian in Immigration and Global Contexts
This review article looks at a groundbreaking book in sociolinguistics by Simone Casini and Salvatore Bancheri, What Is the Language of Power? Theoretical Reflections on Italian, Italiese and Other Languages, which focuses on the forms and uses of Italian in immigrant communities, as well as the role of the Italian language in the global village in which we now reside. Based on research conducted on the kind of Italian that takes shape in immigrant communities, called “Italiese,” one of the main insights that can be gleaned from this penetrating book is that the language that emerges in immigrant communities is a product of creative mechanisms, enlisted unconsciously to render the native language (or dialect) adapted to solving everyday communicative problems that pertain to the new environment socially and conceptually. By making the English input conform to the native language, structurally and semantically, the result is a code that allows for direct access to the new reality on its own terms. The book also relates the ways in which Italiese is constructed and employed to the history of Italian itself, ending with a broad examination of the roles that the language should be playing in an international context today. As such, it provides an expansive theoretical framework for assessing the factors that contribute to making a language, such as Italian, an instrument of control over any environment, real or virtual—hence, a “language of power.”
