Sir Richard Peto Receives CDC Foundation Hero Award
2016
(Marketwired - September 15, 2016) - Cardiovascular disease (CVD), which includes heart attack and stroke, is the leading cause of death in the world today. In recent decades, there have been many advancements to better understand and address the disease, particularly seminal research by Sir Richard Peto, one of the world's foremost epidemiologists. For his efforts to save countless lives worldwide by uncovering the root causes of CVD and cancer and bringing data to bear on public policies, Peto today received the 2016 CDC Foundation Hero Award. The award presentation followed Peto's keynote at the \"Halving Global Cardiovascular Disease Mortality Rates\" symposium at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). \"We are honored to recognize Sir Richard Peto for his forward-thinking work that revolutionized research and policies on cardiovascular disease and cancer,\" said Judith A. Monroe, M.D., president and CEO of the CDC Foundation. \"It's notable that we presented the award to him at this CDC symposium, which highlights the growing global burden of cardiovascular disease worldwide and the powerful evidence generated from population-level surveys and studies. Sir Richard's tireless advocacy to ensure these large-scale studies continue for years to come -- generating data that will shape global policy on CVD -- will no doubt save even more lives and improve economies around the world.\"

Lunchables: Kids Lured With Big Prizes, Not Cheap Toys
2012
A Lunchables meal that includes a ham and cheese sandwich, chocolate pudding, Cheese Nips and fruit punch has 1,130 milligrams of sodium, or 47 percent of the recommended daily allowance. Disney will require a complete meal to have 740 milligrams of sodium or less in order for it to be advertised. The new Disney requirement will allow only 1.1 grams of saturated fat per 100 calories; this Lunchables combination has 4.1 grams of fat per 100 calories. For its part, in the last decade Lunchables has improved its offerings. Over the last 12 years, Lunchables has reduced, on average, sodium by 24 percent, fat by 22 percent and calories by 21 percent, according to Sydney S. Lindner, a Kraft spokeswoman. Lunchables also has added whole grain, with 21 of its 45 varieties now containing at least 8 grams, Lindner said. \"The essence of the Lunchables brand,\" [Joseph Fragnito] said, is that it is given to children \"not as staple, not as routine,\" but rather as an occasional treat.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE CELL
2010
\"There is a historical moment right now in the U.S. that is really conducive to prison reform,\" says Michael Jacobson, who is now president of the Vera Institute for Justice think tank after previously running New York City's departments of Correction and Probation. Not every state has learned the lesson. California's crime policies - especially its barbaric \"three-strikes\" law - have led to overcrowded prisons and a court order to release 40,000 inmates over the next two years. As author and journalist Sasha Abramsky put it: \"In an era of savage budget cuts to the most basic of public services, does it make sense for a state to spend $50,000-$100,000 a year to lock up a cheese thief for the rest of his natural life?\"

Baseball for the ages
'You get to play at all the major league spring training sites, and that's awesome because they are very nice facilities,' said [Michael Jacobson]. 'We don't play like major leaguers, but we get to play where they play.' 'I love the game. I love baseball, and there's nothing I'd rather do than play,' said Jacobson who has built a pitcher's mound in his backyard. 'When you sit here all day working and then you get to go out there, it's just like you're in heaven. You can't beat it.' 'It's the same way for me,' said [Turner] whose current Tornados teammates include Mississippi State defensive coordinator Carl Torbush, a former minor league player, who commutes for games. 'I've always loved baseball. It's stress relief.

Zwei: In the movies you never hear anyone say `Let's go out for German food', do you? It's always French or Italian or Japanese, never German, and for good reason. Vier: The names of German dishes don't help. Sweinshaxe, spatzle, prinzregententorte, pressack and radi raphanus sound more like the front half of Germany's national football team than anything you'd happily plonk on the end of your fork. Backstage banquets
2009
Dining out on tales of rock 'n' roll excess, Michael Jacobson scours the backstage riders of prominent artists to make a meal out of some of music's biggest names The rider refers to the list of demands issued by artists before a single note is played, and it can cover everything from food, booze - the alcohol demands can be prodigious - lighting and the colour of the dressing room curtains to backstage temperatures and, in Peter Gabriel's case, a masseuse to arrive at his dressing room at 6.20pm precisely to `do Peter' for an hour. As well as requiring a room capable of holding six people - let's face it, back in his 1970s Bat Out of Hell halcyon days, Meat Loaf was the size of six people - his pre-show snack consists of multi-grain bread, four crunchy apples, roasted almonds, crackers, potato chips, tortillas, low-fat (obviously) chicken or turkey wieners, French mustard, `some carrots', four muffins, roast pork tenderloin, sauteed green beans, two baked potatoes, corn chips, fruit, chocolate and chewing gum. The rider stipulates this is for two people. Yeah, right.
