The coherence between Javanese Gamelan (Traditional Instrument) and Classical Javanese Dance
2024
Gamelan as the traditional instrument of the Javanese people has an important function in the existence of Javanese dance, especially classical dance. It is called classical because it was born and developed within the Kingdom, while those born outside the Kraton (Javanese court), are called Folk Dance. Gamelan consists of two devices (laras), namely 1) slendro and 2) pelog. Both have their own characteristics. For example, from the number of blades, also the sound products. Javanese people have cultural results of art creations that are commonly referred to as adi luhung, including gamelan, and dance. The coherence between gamelan and dance is very strong, to the level of naming the dance, following the name of the gêndhing in its Karawitan. Karawitan is a combination of beating gamelan with gêndhing, or melody, or even up to the notation. Examples of strong coherence in Javanese Classical Dance, such as: 1) Srimpi Anglirmêndhung Dance, the accompaniment is Gêndhing Srimpi Anglirmêndung, Kêthuk Kalih Kêrep, Minggah Kêtawang Gêndhing Kêmenak, Suwuk, Buka Sri Narendra, Dhawah Kêtawang Langên-gita, Pelog Pathêt Barang, 2) Bêdhaya Endhol-Endhol Dance by Endhol-endhol gêndhing, 3) Golek Asmaradana Dance by Asmaradana gêndhing.

Javanese Islamic architecture: adoption and adaptation of Javanese and Hindu-Buddhist cultures in Indonesia
2021
Javanese Islamic architecture appears to be highly influenced by previous cultures, even though Islam has brought a new civilisation since the 13th century in Indonesia. The classical mosques and houses seem to follow Javanese and Hindu-Buddhist principles in their buildings, elements and spatial arrangements. This paper examines how the Javanese adapted their architecture to meet Islamic values while preserving their previous traditions. The concept of architectural synchronisation in Javanese architecture is examined from the traces observed in the temple dioramas, depictions of contemporary cultural products, and several traditional buildings. The adoptions and adaptations that appear in some significant objects such as old mosques and houses are traced back to previous transformation principles. Architectural harmonisation for new needs seemingly bases on religion as the most potent driving aspect. However, what is interesting is that in the case of Java, embracing a new religion does not mean forgetting existing traditions. On the other hand, the principle of acculturation has created a peaceful transition in architecture. Some evidence suggests that Javanese high culture, such as the classical grand mosque and the joglo house, succeeded in translating Javanese and Hindu-Buddhist ideas into Islamic architecture in very distinctive ways.

The issue of character is an important global issue to be pursued together. This study examines the educational values in Serat Sari Swara by Ki Hadjar Dewantara (KHD). The research used qualitative methods focused on hermeneutic analysis. The source of the data is Serat Sari Swara published in 1930. The results showed that Serat Sari Swara represents the values of character education. Character education values include working hard, obeying rules, living simply, patiently, conscientiously, and sincerely, courteously, courteously, and religiously. Serat Sari Swara, as an influential cultural product, not only entertains but also serves as a medium to instill positive virtues in society. These values are influenced by Javanese culture as the origin of the author. An important implication of the research is that swara sari fiber can be a medium for character education for students and the wider community. This is expected to contribute to efforts to deal with character problems in a global context.

Javanese cosmology: Symbolic transformation of names in Javanese novels
2021
In the past, no research has been found on onomastics from a mystical perspective in literature. This study investigated onomastics in the tetralogy of novels by Ki Padmasusastra (after this referred to as TNKP). The main point of view is the meaning of Javanese cosmology. Qualitative methods are used as research guidelines. The primary data are four Javanese novels. Hermeneutic techniques and content analysis are applied to analytical strategies. The results showed that the onomastics in TNKP are symbols of Javanese cosmology. This element of Javanese cosmology has transformed onomastics through three things: the novel title, figure's name and location name. The symbolisation of the onomastic is implicit because it is wrapped in the aesthetics of the literary language. The name structure of each onomastic subsection has no clear meaning because the name element is intended for the sense of 'the other'. Names have an explicit function, namely as hypertextual fragments of symbols that transcend the narrative text structure. An important implication of this investigation is that onomastics can promote the transdisciplinary aspects of religion in international theology in the study of narrative texts. The cosmological transformation of Java can be reflected in various parts of culture, including in novels. TNKP is a cross-disciplinary meeting: fiction, linguistics, mystical, social, cultural and philosophical, contributing to further theological studies. Contribution This article contributes to the purpose of HTS Teologiese Studies/Theological Studies to promote the transdisciplinary aspects of religious studies in the international theological arena of hermeneutic and philosophical studies behind the narrative text.

2025
This study examines social media detox as a response to spiritual crisis in the digital age. A significant research gap exists as prior studies have neglected its philosophical-cultural dimensions. The main objective is to interpret social media detox as a modern spiritual practice rooted in the Javanese philosophy of Manunggaling Kawula Gusti. Using a qualitative narrative case study, data were obtained from six blogs detailing detox experiences. The data were analyzed through a hermeneutical lens, specifically the theories of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur, to explore the symbolic meanings. The results indicate that social media detox can be understood as a contemporary form of laku prihatin (self-restraint). Participants seek to control digital desires, such as addiction and social comparison, which are obstacles to achieving urip sejati (true life). This act symbolizes the struggle to attain inner tranquility (tentrem) and return to one's true self, a quest at the core of Manunggaling Kawula Gusti. These findings demonstrate that traditional wisdom remains relevant in addressing modern challenges.
