INDIA: JAILING OF FOUR NEWSMEN IGNITES A STORM OF PROTEST
NEW DELHI, Nov. 13 (IPS/GIN) -- India has rarely witnessed the rallying of its public in defence of the freedom of expression as it is seeing today in the case of 'The Hindu' newspaper, which last week was hit with 15-day jail terms for four of its journalists for 'breach of privilege' of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. [Jayaram Jayalalithaa]'s platform is likely to be weak because Ram has withdrawn his request. In any case, the Tamil Nadu police's record is poor. On Friday, it turned up at 'The Hindu' offices to arrest the four journalists and the paper's publisher in keeping with the assembly's order, but without arrest warrants. The following day, they illegally tried to intercept Ram's car in another state, Karnataka. The likely effect of the attempt to gag and punish media criticism by invoking privilege will be to open up for debate a range of issues in India, including the notion of privilege, the nature of the fundamental right to the freedom of expression in democracy, attempts to restrict it through the judicial power of contempt of court, the need to extend freedom to substantive areas other than expression -- and hence a review of other repressive laws.

Amma' Jayalalithaa chills out at farmhouse ahead of vote counting
Attempts to get some sort of reaction from her or her cohorts to the exit poll predictions of the past two days are laughed or smirked off or met with a straight-faced or stony silence. There is a quite air of confidence pervading at [Jayaram Jayalalithaa]'s All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party headquarters. No drumbeats, no show of expected exuberance, no crowds, just a few party managers or activists going about their routine business of the day.
Tamil Nadu Government announces relief for flood victims
