Journalism and Big Data: The Nónio Case
As Clive Humby discribed in 2006, “Big Data is the new oil”, which is why in 2014 more than 91% of Fortune 1000 companies were investing in Big Data projects, based on the promise of higher returns. The goal of this study is to see if that is also happening with Portuguese media corporations by examining Big Data’s impact on content production and the business model of newspapers and news channels. Big Data is a term that simultaneously describes large pools of data as well as the computer techniques used to analyse those data sets. This investigation focuses on the NÓNIO project, a Big Data initiative developed by five of the largest media companies in Portugal: Cofina, Global Media, Grupo Renascença Multimédia, Impresa and Media Capital. This dissertation follows a qualitative approach. In order to gather insights on how the NÓNIO is shaping newsrooms, interviews are conducted with the people in charge of the project at each of the five media companies. Findings suggest that Big Data is having a small impact in content production, but a big one in the business model, as it is radically changing how media companies conduct advertising and how they attract and retain subscriptions.
The Force of the Virtual
The Force of the Virtual explores the problematic relationship between the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and science. The original essays gathered here examine how science functions in respect to Deleuze’s concepts of time and space, how science accounts for processes of qualitative change, how science actively participates in the production of subjectivity, and how Deleuze’s thinking engages neuroscience.

Learning Outcomes for 100 or Double Jeopardy: Developing Best Practices Online
Whether courses are taught in a physical classroom or online, the learning outcomes are the common denominators that educators need to have their learners achieve from the content knowledge delivered in either environment. As more adult learners are faced with various work, family, and/or personal commitments that have either prevented or delayed their educational endeavors. However, such events or factors are becoming less of a barrier to educational plans, but rather the introduction of online learning has enabled more adult learners. Thus, this helps to increase the probability of more traditional students in returning back to education, which may lead to two specific conditions that need to be addressed. First, many of these returning adult learners may not be adequately prepared to move from the traditional Face-to-Face (F2F) physical learning environment to an online learning environment. Second, engaging these traditional students in the online learning environment may necessitate more creative and strategic methodologies. This paper will focus on the lessons learned from creating additional set of learning activities to engage these learners, as well as help them to master their content knowledge and achieve the learning outcomes. One of these learning activities is the incorporation of a Jeopardy-based format. The use of this popular TV show quizzing format has helped to measure learning outcomes/content knowledge, serve as a learning activity to engage the adult learner, and develop a sense of socialization and competitiveness among the learners.
