Detroit Free Press Tom Walsh column
Next Tuesday and Wednesday, the fourth and fifth days of 2005, Sean Werdlow, the man Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick calls his Grim Reaper, will lead an economic forum to discuss Detroit's budget crisis and set the stage for a year of hard decisions and political wailing. Kilpatrick will open the forum with brief remarks and then join the audience, Werdlow says, noting that the forum was the mayor's idea. Don't expect the city's employee unions to do handsprings over proposals for layoffs or wage and benefit concessions. But it's essential they be at the table to offer alternatives for narrowing the budget gap. Kilpatrick and Werdlow should have engaged the unions earlier, but better now than not at all.
