\"In the aftermath of a shattering illness, Lonni Sue Johnson lives in a \"perpetual now,\" where she has almost no memories of the past and a nearly complete inability to form new ones. The Perpetual Now is the moving story of this exceptional woman, and the groundbreaking revelations about memory, learning, and consciousness her unique case has uncovered. Lonni Sue Johnson was a renowned artist who regularly produced covers for The New Yorker, a gifted musician, a skilled amateur pilot, and a joyful presence to all who knew her. But in late 2007, she contracted encephalitis. The disease burned through her hippocampus like wildfire, leaving her severely amnesic, living in a present that rarely progresses beyond ten to fifteen minutes. Remarkably, she still retains much of the intellect and artistic skills from her previous life, but it's not at all clear how closely her consciousness resembles yours or mine. As such, Lonni Sue's story has become part of a much larger scientific narrative--one that is currently challenging traditional wisdom about how human memory and awareness are stored in the brain. In this probing, compassionate, and illuminating book, award-winning science journalist Michael D. Lemonick uses the unique drama of Lonni Sue Johnson's day-to-day life to give us a nuanced and intimate understanding of the science that lies at the very heart of human nature\"-- Provided by publisher.

Purpose of StudyImmune-mediated adverse drug reactions occur commonly in clinical practice and include mild, self-limited cutaneous eruptions, IgE-mediated hypersensitivity, and severe cutaneous adverse drug reactions (SCAR). SCARs represent an uncommon but potentially life-threatening form of delayed T cell-mediated reaction. The spectrum of illness ranges from acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) to drug reaction with eosinophilia with systemic symptoms (DRESS), to the most severe form of illness, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN).Recent FindingsThere is emerging literature on the efficacy of cyclosporine in decreasing mortality in SJS/TEN.SummaryThe purpose of our review is to discuss the typical presentations of these conditions, with a special focus on identifying the culprit medication. We review risk factors for developing SCAR, including HLA alleles strongly associated with drug hypersensitivity. We conclude by discussing current strategies for the management of these conditions.

Purpose of review
Drug hypersensitivity reactions constitute an unpredictable, serious problem for health care systems as they interfere with drug treatment, limit therapeutic options, and may be life-threatening. In addition to specific patient factors, they are also influenced by a genetic component. Indeed, a considerable body of knowledge supports the participation of genetic variants in their underlying mechanisms.
Recent findings
Latest research on this topic confirms the involvement of specific HLA alleles in non-immediate reactions. Two well-known examples are the HLA-B*58:01 allele in severe allopurinol-triggered reactions, and the HLA-B*15:02 allele in carbamazepine-induced Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis. However, there is a lack of reliable genetic markers for immediate reactions and for hypersensitivity to NSAIDs.
Summary
We summarize available information on the genetics of drug hypersensitivity reactions, highlighting regulatory agencies recommendations when available. We include some comments about new technological tools that should be implemented in the study of these reactions.

2015
The majority of research on women’s sexual response has been conducted with heterosexual women, with limited investigation into the experiences of women in same-sex relationships. This review examines the literature published over the past 5 years (2010–2015) that has focused on aspects of sexual response and functioning among lesbian women. Lesbian women’s experiences reflect a fluid pattern of sexual response that expands beyond emotional closeness as the primary motivation for sexual contact. Recent research demonstrates the following: (a) women in same-sex relationships report a variety of motivations for sexual activity, (b) desire is often conflated with sexual frequency, (c) lesbian women report higher rates of orgasm, (d) sexual orientation influences variations in sexual arousal, and (e) sexual orientation does not appear to significantly impact sexual problems. Future research should address the current gaps in sexuality research among lesbian women, most notably related to sexual desire/arousal and orgasm.

EPA Kills Florida Pesticide Study
2005
The nominee to head the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) last week cancelled a controversial study to measure the exposure of children to pesticides 1 day after two legislators threatened to derail his appointment if the study went ahead. Some scientists who see value in the study are worried that acting EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson has placed politics above science in making his decision. EPA says that the controversy scared away potential participants and made the research impossible to carry out.
