Unrivalled influence
2013
Unrivalled Influence explores the exceptional roles that women played in the vibrant cultural and political life of medieval Byzantium. Written by one of the world's foremost historians of the Byzantine millennium, this landmark book evokes the complex and exotic world of Byzantium's women, from empresses and saints to uneducated rural widows. Drawing on a diverse range of sources, Judith Herrin sheds light on the importance of marriage in imperial statecraft, the tense coexistence of empresses in the imperial court, and the critical relationships of mothers and daughters. She looks at women's interactions with eunuchs, the in-between gender in Byzantine society, and shows how women defended their rights to hold land. Herrin describes how they controlled their inheritances, participated in urban crowds demanding the dismissal of corrupt officials, followed the processions of holy icons and relics, and marked religious feasts with liturgical celebrations, market activity, and holiday pleasures. The vivid portraits that emerge here reveal how women exerted an unrivalled influence on the patriarchal society of Byzantium, and remained active participants in the many changes that occurred throughout the empire's millennial history.
Unrivalled Influence brings together Herrin's finest essays on women and gender written throughout the long span of her esteemed career. This volume includes three new essays published here for the very first time and a new general introduction by Herrin. She also provides a concise introduction to each essay that describes how it came to be written and how it fits into her broader views about women and Byzantium.
Fathers, sons and a game
2016
Now Levi and his son, [Justin Phillips II], sit together at George Washington High School basketball games. Levi's grandson and Justin's son, also named Justin, is a sophomore and the Patriots' leading scorer. \"At one point he was shooting 70 percent from the free throw line and I came in from a hard day of work, it's 5:30, and he's sitting there on the couch with all his basketball stuff on. Dad, I have to shoot some free throws,' [Levi] recalled. \"At 9 o'clock that night we're still up at Stonewall shooting free throws. He couldn't stand he was shooting 70 percent from the free throw line. \"You would hear it from people, Oh, he's not going to be as good as his dad. He's not going to be another Justin,' Levi said. \"Now, he's in the 10th grade and you know what they say now? Oh, he's going to be better than his dad.' The same people who said he wasn't going to be as good are saying the opposite now.

Another shooting on Horner Street in Union City
2009
Police on Thursday said they are investigating a link between Wednesday's case and the March 24 shooting that left 21-year-old [Conrado Justin Barba II] dead and a 19-year-old Hayward man wounded. By all accounts, Barba likely was not the target of the shooting in his family's garage. Barba, a mechanic who planned to meet up with his longtime girlfriend that night, had just gotten a haircut in the garage when a gunman crept up beside a truck parked in the driveway and fired at least a half-dozen shots. Two other people in the garage, including Barba's 19-year-old brother, escaped injury.

Hoop teams begin new hoop dreams: High school graduation forces some squads back to square one
Back to \"square one,\" as [Rod Wright] calls it, fresh-faced Ripon is one of many local basketball programs undergoing a major makeover from last season. League champions like Turlock, Modesto and Sonora have to replace most, if not all, of their starting five. [Brandon Stilwill] then strips a Ripon guard at halfcourt and dives over him to grab the loose ball before cruising in for a layup to put [Davis] up 38-18. Gone are graduated leaders Ryan Ghazaeri, Anthony Mattos and Jake Laudenslayer. Playmaking senior Leroy Velasquez is transferring to Modesto Christian. Velasquez could be joined by point guard Eric Waterford, whom Davis coach Dan Pacheco says is \"still evaluating his options.\" Waterford wasn't with the team at Ripon, instead playing with Velasquez with their AAU team in Las Vegas.

Family grieving after fatal shooting in garage
2009
\"I don't know why this happened,\" she said through tears Wednesday morning. \"I don't know why this is happening to me. ... I can't believe what's going on.\" Phil Rozario, one of [Coronado Justin Barba II]'s uncles, said he pulled a bullet out of the dryer and found another on the ground under a pile of clothing in the garage. By all accounts, Justin Barba was a good, quiet man, probably not the intended target of a gunman. He grew up in Union City, and attended Alvarado Middle School and James Logan High School before enrolling in the Universal Technical Institute in Arizona, where he trained to be an auto mechanic. \"When he went out (to Arizona), I went with him,\" said Andrea Icban, Justin's girlfriend of six years. The two had been a couple since high school, but friends much longer. \"We talked about opening a diner and a (auto) shop,\" she said, fighting back tears. Justin has been employed as a mechanic at a local car dealership for more than a year and on Tuesday, he intended to visit Icban, who said she was not feeling well and stayed at home.
