High school star athlete Colin Kaepernick is at a crossroads in life. Heavily scouted by colleges and MLB as a baseball pitcher, he has a bright future ahead of him as a highly touted prospect. Everyone from his parents to his teachers and coaches are in agreement on his future. Colin feels differently. Colin isn't excited about baseball. In the words of five-time all-star MLB player Adam Jones, \"Baseball is a white man's game.\" Colin looks up to athletes like Allen Iverson: talented, hyper-competitive, unapologetically Black, and dominating their sports while staying true to themselves. College football looks a lot more fun than sleeping on hotel room floors in the minor leagues of baseball. But Colin doesn't have a single offer to play football. Yet. This touching graphic novel explores the story of how a young change-maker learned to find himself and never compromise. How the right decision is very rarely the easy one, but taking the road less traveled can make all the difference in the world.
The Episodic Kneel: Racial Neoliberalism, Civility, and the Media Circulation of Colin Kaepernick, 2017–2020
2021
Despite his absence from National Football League (NFL) fields, Colin Kaepernick has exerted an ongoing resonance in American sport-media discourse over the last few years. This article addresses such resonance through three “flashpoints”: President Donald Trump’s inflammatory comments on Kaepernick at a 2017 rally, Nike’s Kaepernick advertising campaign in 2018, and the 2020 resurgence of Black Lives Matter within which Kaepernick, and the act of kneeling, remained central. It is argued that these flashpoints indicate, in varied ways, the hegemony of racial neoliberalism and civility as structuring ideologies in the twenty-first-century United States. Kaepernick amplified his voice through the endorsement of racial-neoliberal discourse (Nike ad), while Trump’s comments and the recent wave of high-profile killings of Black Americans generated condemnation largely focused on acts of (in)civility rather than deeper roots of systemic inequality. Yet recent events also point to signs of the cracking, if not fundamentally de-hegemonizing, of racial neoliberalism, particularly through a turn (if only temporary) away from colorblind “antiracialism” in sport.

The moderating role of consumers' ad perception in athlete endorsement effectiveness
2021
PurposeThis paper aims to examine the structural relationships among the variables of social cause involvement, attitudes toward the endorser, attitudes toward advertising, attitudes toward the brand and social cause behavioral intentions. Additionally, by using the persuasion knowledge model (PKM) as the guiding framework, the moderating effects of ad perception on the proposed relationship were investigated.Design/methodology/approachBy using Amazon Mechanical Turk, a total of 291 usable surveys were retained for analysis. Following the participants' exposure to the Nike commercial, they completed a survey containing questions about advertising perception and their consequent responses to the advertisement. Structural equation modeling was used to test the conceptual model. Multigroup analysis was also performed to discover any moderating effects of consumers' advertising perception in endorsement effectiveness.FindingsThis study highlights the extensive impact of social cause involvement in the domain of celebrity endorsements, while attitudes toward the endorser are not a significant antecedent of celebrity endorsement effectiveness in the sport contexts. Additionally, this study demonstrates and confirms the presence of the moderating effects of advertisement perception on the proposed relationship. This supports the general premise of the PKM that consumers' attitudes and thoughts are influenced based on consumers' judgment of persuasion attempts.Originality/valueThe current study extends the line of research on the role of advertising perception in the domain of celebrity endorsement. In particular, this study found that the PKM is a theoretically sound model that can be used to predict sports fans' attitudinal and behavioral responses.

From Protest to Movement: A Longitudinal Content Analysis of ESPN’s Colin Kaepernick Coverage
2021
This paper presents an analysis of ESPN.com coverage of Colin Kaepernick’s protest against social injustice during the national anthem and the related events that transpired following his initial protest. The analysis looks at ESPN.com articles (N = 305) during three time periods throughout the protest saga, ranging from August 2016 until September 2018. Specifically, the analysis aimed to see whether framing of his protest changed over time as well as the extent to which the overall coverage adhered to a well-known concept called the protest paradigm, which is a framework that outlines how journalists typically cover protests. Results showed content only partially adhered to the protest paradigm and was dependent on the topic of the article. However, even in stories not about the protest, paradigm characteristics were still present. This paper shows how a sports outlet like ESPN covers social protests by athletes and the extent to which its coverage adheres to the paradigm, which is usually applied to mass protests. This study adds to a growing body of literature about the protest paradigm in a sports media context.

Understanding the functional basis of moral conviction: Is moral conviction related to personal and social identity expression?
2025
The degree to which one experiences an attitude as a moral conviction is associated with a host of consequences, such as charitable giving, volunteerism, political engagement, resistance to compromise, intolerance of dissenting viewpoints, and acceptance of any means, including violence, to achieve morally preferred ends. Despite these profound ramifications, our understanding of the psychological functions of moral conviction remains limited. In three studies, we tested competing hypotheses about two possible functions of moral conviction: personal identity and social identity expression. Study 1 developed and validated personal and social identity function measures in a U.S. sample and provided an initial test of hypotheses ( N = 320). Study 2 further validated these measures and tested whether cultural mindset moderated the relationship between identity functions and moral conviction in a U.S. sample ( N = 364). Study 3 tested hypotheses cross-culturally (i.e., using U.S. and Indian samples, N = 300). The personal identity function uniquely predicted moral conviction in all three studies and across six issue domains, whereas the social identity function did not (Studies 1–3). Surprisingly, neither cultural mindset (i.e., an independent and interdependent self-construal or endorsement of the individualizing or binding moral foundations) nor culture moderated these results.
