Monitoring the subjective internal load in elite level kumite-karate athletes: Role of the rest periods duration, breathing techniques, and training volume

Objectives: Study aimed to investigate interdependent effects of rest periods duration, breathing techniques, and training volume, on the set Rating of Perceived Exertion in elite-level karate athletes. Equipment and methods: Nine elite-level athletes (males = 6) participated in this study. We organized six training sessions, each consisting of 200 gyaku-zuki strikes divided into five sets with 40 repetitions per set, with varying rest and breathing techniques (kime, kiai, and without exhalation). The sessions included both short (30 seconds) and long (90 seconds) rest periods, and the training volume was analyzed separately for each of the five sets. Internal load measures were collected from participants during the between-set pauses. Results: The three-way within subject ANOVA have showed the that shorter rest (p = 0.013, η2 = 0.561) and a higher number of sets (p = 0.000, η2 = 0.861) lead to higher subjective responses compared to longer rest and fewer sets. Contrary, the subfactors of breathing techniques did not show significant effects (p > 0.05). Conclusion: This study provides insights into the advantages of rest period duration and training volume on subjective load during kumite-karate training sessions for elite-level karate athletes, suggesting that incorporating these factors could be a beneficial approach in designing kumite-karate training. Cilji: Študija je bila namenjena raziskovanju medsebojno odvisnih učinkov trajanja počitka, dihalnih tehnik in obsega vadbe na nastavljeno oceno zaznanega napora pri karateistih na elitnem nivoju. Oprema in metode: V tej študiji je sodelovalo devet vrhunskih športnikov (moški = 6). Organizirali smo šest treningov, od katerih je vsak obsegal 200 gyaku-zuki udarcev, razdeljenih v pet serij s 40 ponovitvami na serijo, z različnimi tehnikami počitka in dihanja (kime, kiai in brez izdiha). Treningi so vključevali kratke (30 sekund) in dolge (90 sekund) počitke, obseg treninga pa je bil analiziran ločeno za vsakega od petih sklopov. Meritve notranje obremenitve so bile zbrane od udeležencev med premori med serijami. Rezultati: Tristranska ANOVA znotraj subjekta je pokazala, da krajši počitek (p = 0,013, η2 = 0,561) in večje število nizov (p = 0,000, η2 = 0,861) vodita do višjih subjektivnih odzivov v primerjavi z daljšim počitkom in manj nizi. Nasprotno pa podfaktorji dihalnih tehnik niso pokazali pomembnih učinkov (p > 0,05). Zaključek: Ta študija zagotavlja vpogled v prednosti trajanja časa počitka in obsega treninga glede subjektivne obremenitve med treningi kumite-karateja za vrhunske karateiste, kar nakazuje, da bi lahko bila vključitev teh dejavnikov koristen pristop pri načrtovanju treninga kumite-karateja.

Self-Control and Emotion Regulation Mediate the Impact of Karate Training on Satisfaction With Life

Physical activity is an important determinant of a healthy lifestyle. Regular participation in sports-related activities contributes to the maintenance of good psychophysiological and social health. Long-term physical activity has a positive impact on subjective well-being and can reduce stress. Karate is a specific physical activity which focuses on self-regulation and self-development; therefore, it may reduce impulsivity and improve self-control. Good self-control is also related to satisfaction with life and well-being. The presented study aimed to examine the possible intermediate impact of self-control and emotion regulation on the relationship between karate training and satisfaction with life. 58 karate practitioners and 59 control subjects participated in the research. The Satisfaction with Life Scale and the Brief Self-Control Scale were applied in order to assess life satisfaction and the general level of self-control. The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire was used to assess suppression and reappraisal, both of which are distinct aspects of emotion regulation. The direct and indirect relationships between karate training and satisfaction with life were investigated using a linear regression model that included self-control suppression and reappraisal as mediator variables. No direct effects of karate training on satisfaction with life were found, whereas karate training was indirectly associated with satisfaction with life via the indirect path that leads through self-control and reappraisal. This indicates that self-control and reappraisal fully mediate the impact of karate training on subjective well-being. Karate training can therefore play an important role in shaping volitional and personality characteristics, both of which contribute to increasing the well-being of trainees.

Sensory Modality in Students Enrolled in a Specialized Training Program for Security Forces and Its Impact on Karate Performance Indicators

Objectives: The present study examined the sensory preferences adopted by students over three years of training in a specialized training program for security forces (STPSF). It determines their impact on karate performance metrics. Methods: Thirty-one students aged 20 to 26 (SD = 0.81) completed the modified Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic questionnaire (VARK), a tool designed to help identify students’ preferred learning styles. This research suggests a theoretical model in which the balanced and optimal engagement of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities rather than a strict mathematical equation might provide an optimal foundation for improving proficiency in martial arts. Balanced engagement of these sensory modalities can foster a deeper understanding of karate techniques, improve performance, minimize dependence on a single sensory channel, and bolster real-time adaptability. The students were tested at two points: once at the beginning of their enrolment and again after completing their three-year training program. Results: After a relatively intensive intervention over three years, the findings suggest a positive shift in the ratio of the primary modalities, moving toward an optimal balance. Considering the ideal sensory balance of 50:50:50%, the visual modality increased from 45.8 to 50.4, approaching the optimal value. The auditory modality, initially above the ideal level at 53.8, adjusted closer to balance, reaching 51.9. In contrast, the kinesthetic modality slightly decreased from 50 to 47.5, indicating a minor deviation from the ideal state. It was further confirmed that a higher technical level, such as the third kyu, exhibits an equal distribution, approaching the optimal use of the three modalities: visual 51.5 auditory 47.6 and kinesthetic 50.7. Moreover, the progress toward an optimal synergy and a more efficient evaluation of situational possibilities within the decision-making process was more frequently noted in females than in male students. Conclusions: Acknowledging students’ sensory processing preferences can assist the teacher, trainer, coach, and student in advancing interaction, optimizing learning strategies, improving performance, promoting analytical skills, and fostering self-assurance and determination.

Development of upper limb strength in 8-10-year-old children practicing karate

Karate training for children unites the physical and psychological aspects, playing a key role in their development. Physically, karate helps children improve coordination, strength, flexibility and endurance. Punching and blocking techniques, as well as various balance and speed exercises, stimulate muscle mass and motor skill development. Psychologically, karate promotes discipline, self-control and respect for oneself and others. Children learn the importance of concentration and focus, skills that can be applied to other areas of their lives. Importantly, karate creates opportunities to build confidence and self-esteem while encouraging teamwork and social interactions. Training not only develops physical qualities, but also mental resilience, helping children cope with stress and challenges. The general well-being of children is improved thanks to the balance between physical activity and mental development that karate offers.

Problem statement: Specific movement patterns are often deeply limited in disability but naturally understood and acquired as specific basic skills in normal athletes. Delayed learning of motor gestures is one the main causes of execution difficulty that is observed in athletes with disability. Approach: A group of patients suffering from mild-moderate cognitive-intellectual-relational disability was recruited in order to be treated with karate exercises as a method of training, education, inclusive-integrated teaching and rehabilitation. The content of the exercises was organized, over seven months of observation, on working protocols concerning certain natural and specific positions of Karate based on equilibrium, use of lower limbs, agility, praxis and postural patterns. A specific stabilometric platform (SP) was used in the study (Balance System SD, Biodex Medical Systems Inc., Shirley - New York) to measure and improve balance, load displacement, ROM of specific movements and proprioception. The Illinois agility test and the Florida Apraxia Screening Test - (FAST) were used to increase speed and improving apraxic and attention components respectively. Purpose: In order to increase the physical performance of individuals, optimising coordination and motor patterns that are impaired in disability, project objectives and strategies were proposed. Inclusive teaching and specific rehabilitation were incorporated. The protocol allowed participants to practice positions with a dynamic method rather than a static one. The aim was to transfer postural mechanical load and motor activation to the left half of the body, to compensate excess of body permanence in the right area at the SP test in order to facilitate learning abilities that are usually lacking in this type of disability. Results: For each one of the eight subjects, after administration of the exercise protocol on specific positions of the discipline, a balance inclination from right quadrants towards left quadrants respect to initial average was observed. The results confirmed an improvement in all components of the exercises proposed, with consequent neuroplasticity phenomena, even where multiple intellectual deficits coexisted. Conclusions: The observed improvements were of motor and sensory-cognitive nature. Karate can be considered a means of maintaining specific skills and a rehabilitation tool in disability cases.

The Use of Immersive Technologies in Karate Training: A Scoping Review

This study investigates the integration of immersive technologies, primarily virtual reality (VR), in the domain of karate training and practice. The scoping review adheres to PRISMA guidelines and encompasses an extensive search across IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, and Scopus databases, yielding a total of 165 articles, from which 7 were ultimately included based on strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. The selected studies consistently highlight the dominance of VR technology in karate practice and teaching, with VR often facilitated by head-mounted displays (HMDs). The main purpose of VR is to create life-like training environments, evaluate performance, and enhance skill development. Immersive technologies, particularly VR, offer accurate motion capture and recording capabilities that deliver detailed feedback on technique, reaction time, and decision-making. This precision empowers athletes and coaches to identify areas for improvement and make data-driven training adjustments. Despite the promise of immersive technologies, established frameworks or guidelines are absent for their effective application in karate training. As a result, this suggests a need for best practices and guidelines to ensure optimal integration.

Introduction Physical activity is one of the best methods to prevent civilization diseases in modern times. Studies confirm that the appropriate dose reduces the risk of hypertension, heart diseases, cancer, depression, or overweight and obesity. Methods The aim of the study was to assess the changes in individual physical fitness tests among children in early school age participating in karate training. A total of 59 children attending primary school were examined. Selected Eurofit tests were carried out before and after 10 weeks of karate training. Results and conclusions Karate training induced positive changes in the fitness of the studied children. Higher improvements were observed among children with normal body mass as compared with the overweight or obese ones.
