Missing Home: Depictions of Exile during the Portuguese Dictatorship
The experience of particular types of migration, political exile, and diaspora are mainly portrayed from the refugee's perspective, focusing on the travel process itself or the problems of integration. Despite the interest in this theme emerging only recently, its global persistence and relevance are already considerable and are depicted in relation to different contexts by authors such as Judith Kerr, Peter Sís, and Uri Shulevitz, to name a few. This article thus analyzes the depiction of exile as depicted in two Portuguese illustrated children's books portraying the exile experience during the dictatorial regime.
