Kerry-Edwards Fact Sheet: 'Our Plan for America: Stronger at Home, Respected in the World'
Free America From Its Dangerous Dependence On Mideast Oil. To secure our full independence and freedom, we must free America from its dangerous dependence on Mideast oil. By tapping American ingenuity, we can achieve that goal while growing our economy and protecting our environment. Kerry-Edwards will create a new energy and conservation trust fund to accelerate the development of innovative technologies, such as more efficient cars and trucks, the development of biofuels, and creating clean, secure, hydrogen- based energy. Kerry-Edwards will also expand the supply of natural gas, assure 20 percent of electricity comes from renewable sources by 2020, and make clean coal part of our energy solution. Reward Companies that Create Jobs in America. The [Kerry-Edwards] plan will end tax breaks for companies that move jobs overseas and use the savings to reduce the corporate tax rate by 5 percent, cutting taxes for 99 percent of corporations. The Kerry- Edwards plan also includes a New Jobs Tax Credit for new hiring in manufacturing, other businesses affected by outsourcing, and small businesses. Every Young Person Graduates: Today 3 in 10 young people do not finish high school, and half of Hispanics, African Americans, Native Americans don't graduate. Kerry-Edwards will keep better track of graduation rates to hold schools accountable for raising them; will offer more tutoring and mentoring to at-risk youth; will make big high schools smaller when they are not working for their students; and will strengthen the high school curriculum so all students can graduate with a meaningful diploma.
Guam delegates to continue the presidential fight
Even though Guam residents can't vote for president, they can still have a voice in Democratic politics by raising contributions for the Democratic Party and persuading friends and relatives throughout the country to vote for the Kerry-Edwards ticket, delegates said Thursday night. Delegate Madeleine Bordallo, D-Guam, said another continuing battle linked to the presidential race is the fight to get the vote for Guam.
Edwards Pledges to Honor Overtime as Campaign Releases New Study on Effect of New Bush Regulations (2/2)
The following vignettes illustrate what will happen to five different workers who could lose their overtime under the new Bush overtime rules. Americans who work overtime work on average 12 hours of overtime a week. By eliminating time-and-a- half pay from workers for the 12 hours of overtime work, it becomes clear how much less these workers will earn a year with just basic pay. Now: [BOB] earns $10.46 an hour with the twelve extra hours paying $15.69 an hour. By working his normal 40-hour work week, he earns about $22,000 a year. It's not really enough to make ends meet. So he really values that overtime that earns him an additional $9,800 a year, topping him off at over $31,000. That extra overtime makes a huge difference in what Bob can afford and makes paying the bills a whole lot easier. Under New Bush Rules: With Bush's new overtime regulations, nursery school teachers like [LESLIE] will be exempted from overtime protection. Instead of the extra $10,000 she earned a year with overtime, Leslie will make only $6,500 - $3,000 less to pay for her needs.
BBC Monitoring quotes from the African press 27 July
Kenya's People Daily [independent]: \"Despite many efforts to sort out the crisis in Darfur, there are no signs yet that a solution to the humanitarian disaster in the region is about to be found. The Khartoum government is...yet to fully implement its pledge to control pro-government militias, improve security and provide better access for relief efforts... The US and Britain are even considering the use of military force to ensure Khartoum complies. Both of these two options, if effected, will no doubt lead to more suffering, especially for the ordinary citizens.\" (Editorial - \"Darfur blots out progress\") South Africa's Star [independent daily]: \"70 South African men were arrested at Harare International Airport. It was believed they were on their way to Equatorial Guinea to assist a number of other South Africans to overthrow the government of President Obiang Nguema. The men asked South Africa for help - the government did almost nothing. Even after reports surfaced that the 70 men might be extradited to Equatorial Guinea where they will face the death penalty, South Africa did very little... South Africa has a constitutional duty to afford effective diplomatic protection to its citizens.\" (Commentary by Estelle Ellis - \"South Africa's deadly silence on 'mercenaries'\") Gambia's Independent: \"The 22 July [1994] coup was absolutely not a revolution... Revolution means positive change... If anything has changed in terms of political culture, it has changed for the worse... Gambian history of the late 20th century will never archive 22 July 1994 as a revolution. It will be called what is was, and remains: a military coup that not only failed to keep its promises to the Gambian people, but that also continued to thrive for at least a decade, on the emasculation and subjugation of the Gambian people.\" (Commentary on 26 July by Baba Galleh Jallow - \"Was 22 July a revolution?\")
Edwards turns up the volume at anti-Bush pep rallies
The race for the Hawkeye State and its seven electoral votes is close again this year. To keep it and other \"blue\" states -- those that went to [Al Gore] in 2000 -- in the Democratic column and steal Ohio, Florida and other \"red\" states -- those that went to [George Bush] in 2000 -- from the president, Edwards is trying to tap the enthusiasm of supporters such as Pamela Edwards, (no relation), a 51-year-old librarian from Cedar Rapids. His stump speech has become a string of applause lines that boost Kerry and bash Bush. Standing onstage, shirtsleeves rolled up, the former trial lawyer makes his case with biting humor, spinning on the day's headlines about missing ammo in Iraq and the FBI probe of Halliburton, the kind of red meat his partisan audiences hunger for. \"My favorite moment of the debates was when George Bush asked a very important question: 'My time up yet?\"' Edwards says at each rally. \"On November 2, the American people are going to answer George Bush's question for him. 'Yes, George Bush, your time is up. You're going back to Texas.\"'
Ala. state lawmaker rebels against party platform
He's tried to convince other members of the Alabama delegation -- and members of other delegations -- to join him in his revolt because it takes a majority of votes from convention delegates to change the platform. [Alvin Holmes] admits he's found few allies. Joe Reed, head of the Alabama Democratic Conference, said the state's delegates are pressing the [Kerry-Edwards] camp to send the candidates to Alabama. Reed said three visits from Kerry or Edwards would transform Alabama from \"Bush country\" to Kerry territory. But it's unlikely the Kerry-Edwards campaign will spend much time in a state that hasn't elected a Democratic president since 1976, when the state went for Jimmy Carter.
Hillary Clinton trains her sights on helping Dems recapture Senate
As the Kerry-Edwards ticket prepared to hit the campaign trail Friday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton was ready to play a supporting role in the presidential race and push Democrats to reclaim the Senate, which could increase her clout and boost New York's fortunes. She said that neither she nor her husband have received assignments from the Kerry campaign. But Tad Devine, senior adviser to Kerry, said he expects the Clintons to campaign in \"many, many places\" on behalf of the ticket. Clinton repeatedly deflected reporters' questions about whether Sen. John Edwards, Kerry's charismatic running mate, would be her rival for a future presidential nomination. She also said she hoped her convention speech would end speculation that she secretly wants Kerry to lose so that she can run four years from now.

Kerry-Edwards ticket will have to keep looking for Web site address
Alas, for the John Kerry-John Edwards campaign, a bail bondsman in Indianapolis already owns it. \"It's actually my name. That's why I registered it,\" said [Kerry-Edwards]. \"Most people are thinking that I registered it to speculate on it. No.\" Snatching up an adversary's preferred Web turf has become as routine as online campaigning. Looking for the Republican National Committee's critique of John Edwards? Just surf to www.kerrypicksedwards.com or any of several other variations on potential Democratic tickets. And in 2000, President Bush's campaign tried to get federal regulators to crack down on a parody site, gwbush.com.
Voting smooth in Marion
\"The turnout has been a lot better than in years past. . . . A lot of younger people are voting,\" said Henry Kenner, a longtime poll worker at the Lillian Bryant precinct. \"I've seen people I've never seen before.\" \"We came here to vote for [Kerry-Edwards],\" said 77-year-old Meivis Fraser, 77, a naturalized citizen from Jamaica who voted at the Silver Springs Shores Community Center. \"We came here to vote for the young kids of tomorrow. . . . We need someone to stand up for the poor people.\" \"I was a strong supporter for Bush,\" said [Jason Sickels], who left work to vote. \"I agree with a lot of stuff he does, but I also disagree with a lot of things he does. I agree with a lot of things that Kerry does and disagree with some. Just because I'm Republican doesn't mean I'll vote Republican.\"
