Remote sensing-based flash flood mapping and damage assessment in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan
Flash floods pose significant risks due to their rapid onset and destructive potential, causing an estimated 5000 fatalities and billions of dollars in damage annually worldwide. The Dera Ismail Khan district in Pakistan, highly susceptible to flooding, highlights the urgent need for a robust flood risk management framework, especially in the aftermath of the devastating 2022 flash flood, the most severe on record for the region. This study employed remote sensing (RS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques to analyze the flood’s spatiotemporal dynamics and assess the resulting damage. Flood maps were generated using Landsat 9 images using the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) and classified land use using the supervised maximum likelihood method. The findings revealed that the flood inundated approximately 2876 km 2 for about 1.5 months, significantly impacting agricultural and urban areas, with widespread damage to crops and infrastructure. This research highlights the importance of spatiotemporal analysis in improving flood management in Dera Ismail Khan and can serve as a model for similar assessments in other regions globally.
Determinants of Sustainable Entrepreneurship in Morocco: The Role of Entrepreneurial Orientation, Financial Literacy, and Inclusion
This paper investigates the relationship between sustainable entrepreneurship and financial inclusion, financial literacy, and entrepreneurial orientation. As sustainable entrepreneurship gains academic and practical interest, understanding factors that enable entrepreneurs to operate sustainably is fundamental. The manuscript uses an electronic questionnaire distributed to key economic stakeholders and performs partial least squares structural equation modeling on data from 169 respondents. The results show that entrepreneurial orientation has a positive and significant impact on sustainable entrepreneurship, with a beta coefficient of 0.878 and a probability value of less than 0.01. Financial literacy significantly influences sustainable entrepreneurship, with a beta coefficient of 0.389 and a probability value of less than 0.001, and it partially mediates its relationship with financial inclusion, showing a beta coefficient of 0.3 and a probability value of 0.013. Financial literacy and financial inclusion are positively correlated, with a beta coefficient of 0.771 and a probability value of less than 0.05. However, the impact of financial inclusion on sustainable entrepreneurship is negative and insignificant, with a beta coefficient of −0.392, and there is no evidence that entrepreneurial orientation moderates the link between financial literacy and sustainable entrepreneurship. The findings provide valuable insights for Moroccan policymakers to promote entrepreneurship, suggesting that financial literacy plays a crucial role in enhancing sustainable business practices. The study emphasizes the need for Morocco to adapt to current programs and create a supportive financial environment for entrepreneurs. Due to a lack of comprehensive datasets, the study’s conclusions are limited and might not accurately reflect the entire landscape.
Comparative prevalence of different types of viral hepatitis in the district Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan
Viral hepatitis causes both liver inflammation and damage and is a serious health problem. The indoor data of different types of hepatitis were collected from the official records of the administration of District Head Quarter Hospital Dera Ismail Khan for 2 years (2020-2021). A total of 1193 cases of viral hepatitis during the study period were found including viral hepatitis C accounted for 547 (45.9%) cases, followed by the co-infection of viral hepatitis A and E 367 (30.8%) cases, and viral hepatitis B 279 (23.4%) cases. March showed the highest prevalence of hepatitis (33.2%), followed by February (10.2%). The co-infection of hepatitis A and E showed a relatively higher prevalence in 6 months from May to November except September including a peak in June (76.5%) during the study period. While viral hepatitis B demonstrated a comparatively higher percentage prevalence in both February and September with a peak in February (68%), and viral hepatitis C is dominant in January, March, and December with a peak in March (83.8%). All types of viral hepatitis showed variation in prevalence over months and monthly variation concerning peak prevalence exists among different types of hepatitis. Both viral hepatitis A and E demonstrated similar trend in relative prevalence in both 2020 and 2021. Nevertheless, viral hepatitis A and B showed monthly and seasonal variation in relatively prevalence in both years. The study help in adopting strategies for the prevention of viral hepatitis in the study area.
Follow-on to Eradication of Dracunculiasis in District Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan
Dracunculiasis or guinea worm disease causes severe morbidity and disability among effected populations. Pakistan was declared dracunculaisis-free in 1996. The present study is a follow-on to the declared eradication of dracunculiasis in Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Province, Pakistan through investigating disease recurrences and Cyclops species in drinking water sources. A cross-sectional household survey was carried out using in-person questionnaire evaluation along with microscopic assessment of water samples for Cyclops species. Based on previous clinical records of dracunculiasis, five villages of Dera Ismail Khan including Kath Garh, Wanda Dost Ali, Chah Mundar Wala, Ketch and Gara Baloch were surveyed for a total of 206 randomly selected households, where the household heads (106 males and 100 females) were interviewed for any previous dracunculiasis lesion scars or active infections among household members.No active cases of dracunculiasis were observed in the present study. However, 11 individuals, had history of affliction by the disease during 1972-1992. All the water samples from drinking water sources tested negative for the presence of Cyclops species. No recurrence of dracunculiasis to an extent corroborates the proclaimed eradication by Guinea Worm Eradication Program (GWEP) from Dera Ismail Khan District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province.
Source evaluation of physicochemically contaminated groundwater of Dera Ismail Khan area, Pakistan
Groundwater samples collected from Dera Ismail Khan, Pakistan, in 15 different stations were analyzed to determine the status of concentration of different physicochemical parameters. The samples were collected around a sugar mill in the study area. Sample location was selected on the basis of the flow of sugar mill effluents and groundwater. The samples were collected at random intervals in different villages. The physicochemical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved salts (TDS), TH, HCO₃, NO₃, SO₄, PO₄, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, F, and Pb have been analyzed. The results showed that values of the tested parameters for EC, TDS, TH, HCO₃, SO₄, and Na near the sugar mill were very high, which indicate the descent of standard norms of quality and protection procedures for the groundwater around this area.
