The leader of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Laurence Jackson, counts himself fortunate. As a student, he borrowed a violin from his college. After he graduated, in 1989, he was able to borrow more than pounds 30,000 from The Loan Fund for Musical Instruments. \"I don't know how young musicians do it,\" he says. \"Even if they are loaned an instrument the insurance can cost thousands of pounds.\" [Simon Morris] - who has heard of musicians remortgaging their houses to pay for instruments - agrees: \"Some people make more money from owning the violin than playing it. That's what funds their retirement in the end.\"

Detectives fear stolen Pounds 1.2m violin has left the UK as three appear in court
2010
The violin, made in 1696, is one of only about 400 in the world. It was stolen with a Peccatte bow, valued at Pounds 62,000, and another bow made by the School of Bazin valued at more than Pounds 5,000. Detective Inspector Andy Rose, of the BTP, said: \"The chief focus of our investigation remains to get these very precious items returned. Although they are extremely valuable, I want to stress that their sell-on value, in monetary terms, is practically nil because they are unique. John Maughan, 26, of no fixed abode, and two brothers, aged 16 and 14, from Tottenham, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were charged with theft at West London magistrates' court. Maughan was remanded in custody and the teenagers were released on bail.

2010
[Min-Jin Kym], 32, is too distraught to discuss the theft but in a statement released through British Transport Police she almost echoes [Julian Lloyd Webber]'s words. \"I am naturally devastated at the theft of the violin,\" she says. \"As a musician, you do develop a special relationship with your instrument.\" She praises police attempts to find the violin, and thanks friends and family for helping her through \"a thoroughly dreadful experience\". Philip Scott, head of musical instruments at Bonhams auctioneers, adds: \"She will be limbless, in a way, unable to express herself musically.\" Classical music writer and critic Norman Lebrecht says that while it would be \"heartbreaking\" for a musician to lose his or her own instrument, there would be \"a terrible weight of responsibility\" in having a borrowed Strad stolen. \"But if they aren't played, they rot,\" he adds, \"which is why the investment institutions that own them lend them out.\" She made her international debut with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra at 13, and her London debut in 1995. After studying at the Royal College of Music she went on to study with her mentor, Ruggiero Ricci, in Salzburg. He described her as \"the most talented violinist I have ever worked with\" and the Evening Standard's classical music critic Barry Millington considers her \"a whizz-kid\" and \"a very promising young virtuoso\".
