FED:Aust banks well placed to manage turmoil
\"Our assessment is the Australian banking system remains well placed to deal with this latest period of economic turbulence, which may run for some time,\" Dr [Jim Laker] told a senate estimates hearing in Canberra on Tuesday. \"Despite their limited direct exposure to Europe, the market turmoil that would accompany any break up of the euro area or an European sovereign or banking default would undoubtedly impact on the larger Australian banks due to the reliance on global funding markets,\" he said.
Bowled over in '56 by Ashes ace
The performance of Stuart Broad in the fourth Test Match against Australia was breathtaking, but don't forget Jim Laker's 19 wickets for England in an Ashes test way back in 1956.
Spin king Swann lands in record books on tough day for England
\"It is a proud moment,\" said the 33-year-old. \"I'm always saying I'm not one for stats. But when people told me I was near to [Jim Laker], I was genuinely excited.
Cricket: Swann adds a sour note to England's sweet victory: Spinner takes five more wickets but cheapens feat: Verbally abuses home side's maiden centurion
Graeme Swann became the first England off-spinner to take 10 wickets in a Test since Jim Laker routed Australia at Old Trafford in 1956, but his latest achievement in an outstanding year was laced with controversy because of a gratuitous outburst against the Bangladesh batsman Junaid Siddique as the bowler finally swung the first Test in England's favour. Bangladesh's right to Test status has been questioned, but the discipline of Siddique and Mushfiqur was a persuasive retort. The former's technique is not easy on the eye but their coach, Jamie Siddons, recognises him as a battler. Mushfiqur's keeping is lacking, but as a wicketkeeper-batsman he is a diamond. He fell for 95 when Swann deceived him in the flight, tempting him down the pitch for virtually the first time in search of a straight six to bring up his own hundred.

Lord James Company Doctor Still at the City crease, 52 years on Lord James of Blackheath has some trenchant views on corporate life, writes Helen Power
Britain's most famous \"company doctor\" David - now Lord - James remembers the day well. Quite apart from [Jim Laker]'s still unbeaten feat, it was the first day of Lord James' long career in the City. He's also got plenty to say on Gordon Brown's handling of the current crisis, particularly the nationalisation of Northern Rock. \"It is not the place of the Government to become the new Hanson of the 21st century by creating mini-conglomerates arising out of the leavings of a recession and that's what they are going to end up doing,\" he says. \"The victims of recession today are the manufacturers we rely on in China because we've exported part of the problem. You won't get a recession this time around where millions will be laid off. High streets will collapse, but it won't be to the detriment of the British manufacturer,\" he says.
ON THIS DAY
Jim Laker took his 19th Australian wicket for 90 runs in a remarkable bowling feat at Old Trafford.
Hardly bowled over
As the last batsman was caught at slip, [Jim Laker] turned to the umpire, collected his cap and walked off the field, exchanging a few handshakes on the way to the pavilion. nowadays, bowlers require just five wickets...
THE ARCHIVE JIM LAKER CRICKET'S MASTER OF SPIN
A right arm off-spinner, [JIM LAKER] took nine for 37 in the first innings (Surrey spin colleague Tony Locke took the other) and all 10 in the second. It was the first time any bowler had taken all 10 in a Test innings, and only Anil Kumble of India has matched that since. No other bowler has taken more than 17wickets in a first-class match. When Laker died of septicaemia, aged 64, in 1986, John Arlot, doyen of cricket commentators, stated in an obituary that he was: \"the finest off-spinner the game has ever known\". Though the Test highlights were being shown, nobody recognised Laker. Indeed, when he got home, his Australian wife demonstrated the extent of her interest in cricket when she asked: \"Jim, did you do something good today?\" She had taken hundreds of congratulatory phone calls. The media said Australia had been \"Lakered\".
