Sepphoris was an important Galilean site from Hellenistic to early Islamic times. This multicultural city is described by Flavius Josephus as the \"ornament of all Galilee,\" and Rabbi Judah the Prince (ha-Nasi) codified the Mishnah there around 200 CE. The Duke University excavations of the 1980s and 1990s uncovered a large corpus of clay oil lamps in the domestic area of the western summit, and this volume presents these vessels. Richly illustrated with photos and drawings, it describes the various shape-types and includes a detailed catalog of 219 lamps. The volume also explores the origins of the Sepphoris lamps and establishes patterns of their trade, transport, and sale in the lower city's marketplace. A unique contribution is the use of a combined petrographic and direct current plasma-optical emission spectrometric (dcp-oes) analysis of selected lamp fabrics from sites in Israel and Jordan. This process provided valuable information, indicating that lamps found in Sepphoris came from Judea, the Decapolis, and even Greece, suggesting an urban community fully engaged with other regional centers. Lamp decorations also provide information about the cosmopolitan culture of Sepphoris in antiquity. Discus lamps with erotic scenes and mythological characters suggest Greco-Roman influences, and menorahs portrayed on lamps indicate a vibrant Jewish identity.

Multiplexing LAMP Assays: A Methodological Review and Diagnostic Application

The loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technique is a great alternative to PCR-based methods, as it is fast, easy to use and works with high sensitivity and specificity without the need for expensive instruments. However, one of the limitations of LAMP is difficulty in achieving the simultaneous detection of several targets in a single tube, as the methodologies that allow this rely on fluorogenic probes containing specific target sequences, complicating their adaptation and the optimization of assays. Here, we summarize different methods for the development of multiplex LAMP assays based on sequence-specific detection, illustrated with a schematic representation of the technique, and evaluate their practical application based on the real-time detection and quantification of results, the possibility to visualize the results at a glance, the prior stabilization of reaction components, promoting the point-of-care use, the maximum number of specific targets amplified, and the validation of the technique in clinical samples. The various LAMP multiplexing methodologies differ in their operating conditions and mechanism. Each methodology has its advantages and disadvantages, and the choice among them will depend on specific application interests.

İznik / Nikaia, İstanbul Kapı Kazıları’ndan Pişmiş Toprak Kandiller

İznik (Nikaia) kentinin dört ana kapısından biri olan İstanbul Kapı ve yakın çevresindeki surların restore edilmesi amacıyla, 2017-2018 yılları arasında İznik Arkeoloji Müzesi başkanlığında, araştırma kazıları gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmamız kapsamında kazı buluntuları içinde yer alan 23 tüm ve tüme yakın pişmiş toprak kandil değerlendirilmiştir. Bu kandillerden biri Pontika üretimi, iki tanesi Kuzey Afrika üretimi, bir tanesi Küçük Asya (Asia Minor) üretimidir. 19 adet kandil ise, İznik kentinde uzun süredir devam eden Antik Roma Tiyatrosu Kazıları’nda rastlanan birebir benzer özellikler taşıyan örnekler doğrultusunda “İznik Yerel Üretim” olarak sınıflandırılmıştır. Bu kandiller, form ve bezeme karakteri itibarıyla Anadolu üretimlerine yakın olmakla birlikte, bilinen Anadolu atölyeleri üretimlerinden bazı farklılıklar da göstermektedir. Bunların dışında iki kandilin dip kısmında saptanan “sarmaşık yaprağı” biçimli kazımanın, atölye işareti (?) olarak kullanılmış olması ihtimali bulunmaktadır. Yüzyıllarca seramik üretimi yapılan Nikaia kentinde 5. ve 7. yüzyıllar arasında kandil üretimi yapıldığı düşünülmektedir. Bu üretimlerin atölye işareti için hem kentin tarihindeki Dionysos kültü hem de İznik kentinin doğa örtüsü ile ilişkili olarak yaprak deseni seçilmiş olması ihtimali göz önünde tutulmalıdır.

This study introduces a novel methodology for the accurate characterization of photovoltaic (PV) devices that are using spectral distributions from various unfiltered light sources, including ASTM G173-03 solar irradiance, xenon arc lamp, metal halide lamp and tungsten halogen lamp within the 300–1300 nm wavelength range. By leveraging experimental values of external quantum efficiencies and open circuit voltages from nine distinct solar cell technologies, the authors calculated efficiencies with minimal deviation from the experimental benchmarks. The approach uniformly applies across all light sources, revealing a significant correlation between the power and spectrum of light sources that mitigates their spectral influence on solar cell output parameters. This work not only advances the understanding of light source effects on PV device performance but also proposes a correction methodology that significantly reduces evaluation errors, providing a pathway towards more accurate and cost-effective PV device testing and characterization.
