Landscape architecture : an introduction

Reconstruction and Efficient Visualization of Heterogeneous 3D City Models
The increasing efforts in developing smart city concepts are often coupled with three-dimensional (3D) modeling of envisioned designs. Such conceptual designs and planning are multi-disciplinary in their nature. Realistic implementations must include existing urban structures for proper planning. The development of a participatory planning and presentation platform has several challenges from scene reconstruction to high-performance visualization, while keeping the fidelity of the designs. This study proposes a framework for the integrated representation of existing urban structures in CityGML LoD2 combined with a future city model in LoD3. The study area is located in Sahinbey Municipality, Gaziantep, Turkey. Existing city parts and the terrain were reconstructed using high-resolution aerial images, and the future city was designed in a CAD (computer-aided design) environment with a high level of detail. The models were integrated through a high-resolution digital terrain model. Various 3D modeling approaches together with model textures and semantic data were implemented and compared. A number of performance tuning methods for efficient representation and visualization were also investigated. The study shows that, although the object diversity and the level of detail in the city models increase, automatic reconstruction, dynamic updating, and high-performance web-based visualization of the models remain challenging.
Sustainable urban landscapes: a computation framework for enhancing sustainability in early-stage design
PurposeThis study uses computer-aided design to improve the ecological and environmental sustainability of early-stage landscape designs. Urban expansion on open land and natural habitats has led to a decline in biodiversity and increased climate change impacts, affecting urban inhabitants' quality of life and well-being. While sustainability indicators have been employed to assess the performance of buildings and neighbourhoods, landscape designs' ecological and environmental sustainability has received comparatively less attention, particularly in early-design stages where applying sustainability approaches is impactful.Design/methodology/approachThe authors propose a computation framework for evaluating key landscape sustainability indicators and providing real-time feedback to designers. The method integrates spatial indicators with widely recognized sustainability rating system credits. A specialized tool was developed for measuring biomass optimization, precipitation management and urban heat mitigation, and a proof-of-concept experiment tested the tool's effectiveness on three Mediterranean neighbourhood-level designs.FindingsThe results show a clear connection between the applied design strategy to the indicator behaviour. This connection enhances the ability to establish sustainability benchmarks for different types of landscape developments using parametric design.Practical implicationsThe study allows non-expert designers to measure and embed landscape sustainability early in the design stages, thus lowering the entry level for incorporating biodiversity enhancement and climate mitigation approaches.Originality/valueThis study expands the parametric vocabulary for measuring landscape sustainability by introducing spatial ecosystem services and architectural sustainability indicators on a unified platform, enabling the integration of critical climate and biodiversity-loss solutions earlier in the development process.
Research on Intelligent Landscape Design Based on Distributed Integrated Model
Traditional landscape design methods rely entirely on the experience of designers and are difficult to adapt to the needs of modern society. This article proposes a landscape design method based on a distributed integrated model. Based on landscape design scheme data, the intelligent landscape design function is achieved by constructing a distributed geographic model, extracting features through data analysis and key point analysis, and using virtual environments in computer-aided design to display and restore the actual effects of landscape design. The results indicate that the landscape design method based on distributed integration mode is more in line with the needs of modern society and has significant advantages over traditional landscape design in terms of public interest and evaluation coefficient. The intelligent landscape design method based on distributed integrated models has important significance in modern urbanization construction, which can effectively improve the accuracy and speed of landscape design and create better living spaces for people.
Application of Computer Technology in the Visualized Landscape Design of Modern Urban Garden Environment
The landscape design of the garden environment is closely developed with the combination of aesthetics, environmental science, and planning technology. To solve the dynamic landscape characteristics, this paper relies on computer technology to carry out the visualized landscape design of modern urban gardens, realizes 3D solid modeling and 3D real-time virtual presentation of design scenes, lays a theoretical foundation for garden landscape planning, and discusses in detail the simulation in professional modules process. Finally, an engineering example is used to verify the effectiveness of the system.
