Stravinsky: Oedipus Rex & Bruckner: Te Deum
2003
In the Stravinsky, the young, vigorous [Herbert von Karajan] makes Oedipus Rex a red-blooded Italian opera. Karajan's rhythm is heavier and broader and less biting than usual in this workeven the primitive offbeat passages are filled out-and the harmony is anything but pungent. Karajan's tempos are not fast, but they're not static, either. The orchestra can sound like a good street band. It scrambles in places, but the street image fits, and the group plays well, and grimly, enough.

MAN SAVED FROM AUSCHWITZ AS BABY MEETS HIS RESCUER
1991
[Laszlo Szagmeiszter], a Christian friend of the family, helped the mother by smuggling milk for her baby into the ghetto. A month later, when all the Jews in the ghetto were shipped to Auschwitz, Szagmeiszter and his wife succeeded in getting the baby out of the ghetto. Since they had a son of their own of the same age, they spread the word that the \"new\" baby was really a twin of their baby. Returning to her hometown of Sobotice, [Magda Engler] found that reclaiming her son was not so simple. At first she thought that the Szagmeiszter baby was her son. When her real son was handed to her, he refused to accept her and even scratched her face when she took him in her arms. Weaning him away from his adoptive parents, who had grown fond of him and who had no way of knowing whether his real parents would ever return, was a slow process.
