Diglossia is one of the main characteristics of Arabic language. In Arab countries, there are three forms of Arabic that co-exist: Classical Arabic (CA) which is mainly used in the Quran and in several classical literary texts, Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) that descends from CA and used as official language, and various regional colloquial varieties of Arabic that are usually referred to as Arabic dialects (AD). Deemed to be amongst low-resource languages, these dialects have aroused increased interest among the NLP community in recent years. Indeed, the various Arabic dialects are increasingly used on the social web and may be transcribed in both the Arabic and the Latin script. The latter is known as Arabizi and seems to be more frequently used for some of them. The AD NLP raises many challenges and requires the availability of large and appropriate language resources. In this study, we focus, in particular, on the Maghrebi Arabic dialects (MADs). We propose a thorough review of the language resources (LRs) that have been generated by the various work carried out on the MAD language processing. A survey of the currently online available MAD NLP dedicated-LRs is also compiled and discussed. LRs investigated in this work are essentially data-resources such as primary and annotated corpora, lexica, dictionaries, ontologies, etc.

Animal proverbs
2024
Proverbs exist in a plethora of languages to express worldly wisdom, frequently in a metaphorical way. A number of proverbs are documented in more than one language since speakers adopt them from cultures they have been in contact with. The focus of the present study is on animal proverbs in English which have a foreign equivalent in another language, such as French, Latin, Greek, Japanese or Arabic. The
Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs
(henceforth referred to as the
ODP
), edited by Jennifer Speake in 2015, is a valuable source for collecting the variety of animal proverbs which have become established in English over time.

Pickles, Hiccups, and an Upside-Down Gloss: Two Fragments of Judeo-Arabic Medical Treatises in the Stanford University Collections
2024
This article reconstructs the history of two fragments in the Stanford University Collections. Although they once belonged to different manuscripts, they share much in common: both were copied in the western Mediterranean sometime around the fourteenth century, both contain excerpts of Arabic medical treatises transliterated into Hebrew characters, both contain marginal glosses in other languages (Latin in the one case; Hebrew and Romance vernaculars in the other), and both were subsequently reused as book bindings. Thanks to the insights gleaned from tools both old and new (the latter ranging from multispectral imaging to Twitter), the fragments together attest to the circulation of knowledge from Iran to Iberia, the material frameworks that enabled exchanges across religious and linguistic divides, and the violent dismemberment of manuscripts and communities alike in the closing decades of the Middle Ages.

La sustitución de palabras patrimoniales por arabismos: el caso de lande – bellota
2024
The replacement of Arabisms by Latin cultisms and European foreign words is a common phenomenon in the history of the Spanish language. The opposite phenomenon, i.e. the substitution of a inherited word by an Arabism, is, however, less frequent. In this paper we intend to investigate the fate of the inherited word lande, substituted by the Arabic word bellota. First, a lexicographical investigation of Spanish historical dictionaries will be carried out, in order to check the usage of the words at the time, as well as the state of their lexical rivalry. Secondly, a corpus research will be carried out, taking as a basis the CDH corpus, the most complete diachronic corpus of Spanish. The study will attempt to answer the questions how? and why? of these lexical changes.
