Maine 2019 Political Update: Electing to Change, and Changing Elections
Since the spring of 2018, Maine has seen significant political change. Most, but not all, of this change has come a result of the 2018 elections. This article, a companion piece to my participation as the Maine representative on the annual New England Politics Roundtable at NEPSA, will paint a picture of these changes. Much of the theme of the article is how elections work in Maine, and how the results of elections lead to changes in policy-changes that often saw the Dirigo State as the first in the nation to enact them. While Republican gubernatorial candidates ignored the presence of ranked choice voting in their primary, Eves and Sweet used ranked choice voting in an unprecedented way. Not only did they campaign together at various events, but they also ran television commercials in which they appeared together, urging voters to rank one of them first and the other second.
