Timor-Leste: The History and Development of Asia’s Newest Nation is a study of how a small Asia-Pacific nation has emerged from protracted conflict and successfully navigated a path to durable peace and sustainable development. Despite early setbacks, Timor-Leste has made an amazing turnaround and today finds itself in a new era in which it will certainly continue its advance toward the goal of long-term stability and prosperity, leaving permanently behind the past that was once marked by a descending spiral of destruction. Yet, a number of development challenges lie ahead for Timor-Leste, particularly in strengthening human, institutional, and infrastructural capacities in the short to medium term, and in transforming the national economy from oil-based to more diversified and better balanced in the longer run. Other countries may draw valuable lessons from Timor-Leste’s experience, especially those that are emerging from as well as are currently affected by conflict and instability. Such lessons would center on the questions such as management of natural resources, empowerment of the vulnerable, implementation of transparent and accountable governance, advancement of women, and mobilization of civil society and the public in general for democratization and the national development process.

Timor-Leste has put in place institutional structures and implementing agencies for advancing cooperation with ASEAN. It is also moving towards harmonizing its laws with ASEAN instruments. However, its capacity remains in question due to a lack of substantive knowledge and technical expertise among government officials, as well as inadequate infrastructure, logistics and facilities for hosting ASEAN meetings.

The key question for many anthropologists and historians today is not whether to cross the boundary between their disciplines, but whether the idea of a disciplinary boundary should be sustained. Reinterpreting the dynamic interplay between archive and field, these essays propose a method for mutually productive crossings between historical and ethnographic research. It engages critically with the colonial pasts of indigenous societies and examines how fieldwork and archival studies together lead to fruitful insights into the making of different colonial historicities. Timor-Leste's unusually long and in some ways unique colonial history is explored as a compelling case for these crossings.

Original Abstract: A leishmaniose visceral e uma doenca parasitaria de carater zoonotico, ocasionada por protozoarios intracelulares obrigatorios pertencentes ao genero Leishmania, e de grande importancia em saude publica devido ao aumento significativo do numero de casos humanos e caninos nos ultimos anos. Neste contexto, nos avaliamos a situacao da leishmaniose canina na Microrregiao Serrana dos Quilombos do estado de Alagoas, Brasil, por meio de um estudo soroepidemiologico prospectivo transversal. Para isso, foi realizado a pesquisa de anticorpos anti-Leishmania em amostras de soro de 250 caes, por meio da Reacao de Imunofluorescencia Indireta (RIFI) utilizando o kit Bio-Manguinhos registered /Fiocruz. Um total de 42 (16,8%) animais foi considerado positivo pela tecnica empregada. Destes, 28,5% (12/42) foram caes sintomaticos e 71,5% (30/42) nao apresentavam sinais clinicos. Nos concluimos que a leishmaniose visceral esta presente na populacao canina residente na area dos quilombos alagoanos, fato este que pode favorecer o surgimento de casos humanos. Desta forma, os inqueritos soro epidemiologicos e outras medidas de vigilancia ativa sao essenciais para o monitoramento da infeccao a nivel populacional, sendo necessario, portanto, uma maior acao por parte dos servicos de controle de endemias e uma atencao ao controle local das leishmanioses na area estudada.

East Timor, the world's newest nation, finally gained its independence in 2002, following half a millennium of Portuguese rule and 24 years of Indonesian occupation. That occupation produced a refugee diaspora spread between Portugal and Australia that has been integral in advancing East Timor's cause abroad. Because East Timorese in the diaspora identified strongly as exiles and invested so much in pursuing East Timor's independence, the homeland's liberation has complicated the very basis on which many have \"imagined\" themselves since fleeing to Australia.Wise interrogates the space after exile for members of the East Timorese diaspora in Australia, in dialogue with key debates on diasporic identities within cultural studies, contemporary anthropology, and cultural geography. Drawing on innovative ethnographic research, explores questions of shifting identity and home, trauma and embodiment, belonging and return among the East Timorese abroad at this critical juncture in their lives. The book asks what forms of cultural identity emerge among politically active refugee diasporas, what happens to such groups when the dream of homeland is fulfilled, and how they renegotiate a sense of home after exile.The lived experience of Timorese in Australia and former refugees who have returned to East Timor is brought to life through their eloquent and often moving firsthand narratives, which the author has used liberally throughout the book, vividly presenting them alongside images and analysis of their role in the political struggle.Providing unique insights into cultural identities in the transition from exile to diaspora in a post-refugee group, is essential reading for anyone interested in questions of home and identity among diasporic, transnational, and refugee communities.
