Too many hot dogs take home top prize but lose peristalsis -- Researchers call for federation to conduct studies on current and former competitive speed eaters
\"I'm not sure what the reaction will be of the International Federation of Competitive Eating,\" said lead author of a new study Dr. Marc Levine, admitting the difficulty of drawing conclusions from a sample size of one. \"We certainly hope that the IFOCE will see this as an early warning sign and consider monitoring the long-term health of present and past competitors to get a better handle on the risks of this sport.\" Researchers speculated that aging speed eaters could lose their willpower to control eating, leading to chronic binge eating because they never feel sated. Such a scenario could lead to morbid obesity. Additionally, their stomachs could lose the ability to shrink to their original size and become incapable of digesting or emptying solid food. They could then develop intractable nausea and vomiting, necessitating a partial or total gastrectomy to relieve their symptoms and restore their ability to eat. \"My son is a speed eater,\" he said. \"I always scold him not to eat fast. Maybe this will help him have more concern about his habit.\"

Billionaire chairman Donald Bren owns the company.
California legislation creating health, safety standards for fashion models moves forward
\"I think that the powerful women beside me have made a compelling case\" for the legislation, Marin County Democrat Marc Levine, the bill's author, told the seven members of the Assembly's Committee on Labor and Employment. They had just heard from three ex-models who recounted a workplace environment that they characterized as physically and mentally abusive. \"We made history by providing vital protection for farmworkers, and banning smoking in the workplace\" as well as increasing the state's minimum wage, Levine said. \"This bill continues California's worker protection efforts.\" \"That might sound ridiculous, but it is not,\" said [Nikki DuBose], who told them she lost so much weight as a model that she became anorexic. \"That is what happens in the modeling industry on a regular basis, and that is what happened to me.\"
California lawmaker's bill would create health standards for fashion models
Opponents of [Marc Levine]'s bill include a number of modeling agencies, as well as the Association of Talent Agents. That group argues that it is committed to promoting the health and well-being of all models, but that the bill \"creates major disruption and legal confusion for state licensed talent agencies, doesn't resolve the real issue, and is unworkable.\" [James Lock] said that the impact of those images doesn't always lead to eating disorders. \"But,\" he said, \"they do create anxiety around appearance that makes someone vulnerable to more likely adopt behaviors that are unhealthy, like severe dieting and over-exercising, and binging and purging.\" Contact Tracy Seipel at 408-920-5343. Bay Area assemblyman wants to legalize 'ballot selfies' in California
\"I've been taking ballot selfies since I began taking my children to the polls with me,\" [Marc Levine] said. \"I and many of my friends share our ballots on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as we vote at home or are at a voting booth.\" \"This is a serious concern,\" Levine said. But he said, \"It is already illegal to be compensated for voting. It is already illegal to engage in voter intimidation or coercion, and my bill will also continue to prohibit that behavior.\" \"The ballot selfie is protected political speech,\" Levine said in a statement. \"Elections officials must demonstrate public harm through nefarious use of ballot selfies before denying voters their First Amendment rights. I encourage California voters to exercise their right to political speech.\" --- (c)2015 The Marin Independent Journal (Novato, Calif.) New lane on Richmond-San Rafael bridge hits legislative traffic jam
[Marc Levine]'s legislation called for the lane to open \"no later than Sept. 30.\" But Levine said the lane will not open this week and that his bill may not be heard until January as it still sits in a committee. Levine said the lane could be opened on a \"temporary\" basis until a permanent fix is achieved, helping relieve traffic, which chokes the bridge's approach during the evening commute. \"It was our idea and its all of our funding to make this happen,\" said Randy Rentschler, director of legislation and public affairs for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. \"We were the initiators of this. It was (Marin supervisor and MTC member) Steve Kinsey who made us focus on trying to relieve congestion on that bridge.\" --- (c)2015 The Marin Independent Journal (Novato, Calif.) Pressure grows to open third eastbound lane on Richmond-San Rafael Bridge
\"The lane is there, they are just pretending it's a shoulder,\" [Marc Levine] said, adding the lane could be opened on a \"temporary\" basis until a permanent fix is achieved. \"The time has long past to open the lane as we see commuters stuck in traffic when they should be home with their families. There is also harm to air quality as cars sit there. There is an immediate solution to this problem.\" \"The traffic from the bridge is backing up throughout Marin County causing daily gridlock and unnecessary delay and frustration for tens of thousands of residents from Marin, Sonoma, Contra Costa and beyond,\" said [Katie Rice], president of the Board of Supervisors, in a statement. \"The solution to that gridlock is simple: Open the existing third lane on the bridge.\" \"Traffic on this critical east-west commuter link is causing horrendous backups on the bridge, local streets and nearby Highway 101,\" he said in a statement. \"Levine's sensible legislation will move this project forward and provide badly needed traffic relief for the North Bay.\"
