The article examines the role of proper names in terminology. In meteorology, the following are identified: (a) syntagms associating a proper name with a common noun with or without a linker, (b) adjectives derived from anthroponyms, and (c) terms resulting from the appellativization of proper names. The study focuses on forms constructed with or without de. The analysis of dictionaries reveals that (a) certain terms are always formed with the direct construction; (b) some systematically use the construction with de in all sources analysed; (c) variations exist between dictionaries; and (d) certain terms show variations even within a single dictionary. These observations reveal the absence of a strict normative rule and constitute an interesting terminological variation.

A long-standing tradition within biblical scholarship sets the Greek text of the Septuagint constantly in relationship with its supposed Hebrew or Aramaic Vorlage, examining the two together in terms of their grammatical alignment as a standard. Yet another tradition frames the discussion in different terms, preferring instead to address the Septuagint first of all in light of its contemporary Greek linguistic environment and only then attempting to describe its language and style as a text. It is this latter approach that William A. Ross employs in this textually based study of the Greek versions of Judges, a so-called double text in the textual history of the Septuagint. The results of his study offer a window into the Old Greek translation and its later revision, two distinct stages of Greek Judges with numerous instances of divergent vocabulary choices that reflect deliberateness in both the original selection and the subsequent change within the textual development of the book. Ross’s study illustrates the practicalities and payoff of a Greek-oriented lexicographical method that situates the language of the Septuagint squarely within its contemporary historical and linguistic context.

This volume brings together fifteen articles exploring the linguistic and literary foundations of lexicography and lexicology. Topics explored here include a discussion of the relationships between lexicography and ideology in China; Frisian legal language and the Deutsches Rechtswörterbuch; the history and lexicography of Faroese; Wortgeschichte digital and its relation to Grimmian tradition; the linguistic history of phonetically imitative words; and studies of Croatian, Czech, English, Greek, and Turkish historical dictionaries. The book also presents a digital and textual study on the status of eponyms across the history of the Royal Society, as well as a study of German paronym dictionaries, a modern history of bilingual Russian-Tajik terminological dictionaries, and a historical overview of the lexicography of Frisian. The research findings and close readings by expert practitioners and historians of dictionaries and word studies found in the pages of this volume continue to broaden critical perspectives upon the study of manuscripts and print artifacts; dictionaries and standard varieties; biographies; bibliography and text analyses; dictionary production; and corpus and digital analyses.

Trends in Classics, a new series and journal to be edited by Franco Montanari and Antonios Rengakos, will publish innovative, interdisciplinary work which brings to the study of Greek and Latin texts the insights and methods of related disciplines such as narratology, intertextuality, reader-response criticism, and oral poetics. Both publications will seek to publish research across the full range of classical antiquity. The series Trends in Classics Studies welcomes monographs, edited volumes, conference proceedings and collections of papers; it will provide an important forum for the ongoing debate about where Classics fits in modern cultural and historical studies. The journal Trends in Classics will be published twice a year with approx. 160 pp. per issue. Each year one issue will be devoted to a specific subject with articles edited by a guest editor.

Through electronic corpora we can observe patterns which we were unaware of before or only vaguely glimpsed. The availability of multilingual corpora has led to a renewal of contrastive studies. We gain new insight into similarities and differences between languages, at the same time as the characteristics of each language are brought into relief. The present book focuses on the work in building and using the English-Norwegian Parallel Corpus and the Oslo Multilingual Corpus. Case studies are reported on lexis, grammar, and discourse. A concluding chapter sums up problems and prospects of corpus-based contrastive studies, including applications in lexicography, translator training, and foreign-language teaching. Though the main focus is on English and Norwegian, the approach should be of interest more generally for corpus-based contrastive research and for language studies in general. Seeing through corpora we can see through language.

Tout au long du XVIIIème siècle et en raison des nouveaux progrès scientifiques, l’on assiste dans toute l’Europe à une véritable éclosion de dictionnaires, d’encyclopédies et de répertoires lexicaux qui prétendent compiler et classer le nouveau flot de vocabulaire. L’apparition du dictionnaire monolingue donne un élan décisif à la publication d’ouvrages à classement alphabétique qui facilitaient au lecteur une consultation plus aisée et plus rapide. Nous nous intéressons plus particulièrement aux parties communes à tous ces ouvrages lexicographiques telles que l’Avis au lecteur, l’Avant-Propos, la Préface et autres: elles éclairent profondément tout ce qui a trait tant à la composition qu’à la publication et la diffusion de l’ouvrage. Dans cet article, nous analysons le paratexte dans un corpus composé de quatre dictionnaires monolingues français de termes agricoles: ces ouvrages contribuèrent à la diffusion et à la vulgarisation de la nouvelle terminologie agricole liée aux récents progrès réalisés dans ce domaine.

The latest research conducted by De Jong (2014) indicated that only a few European academic dictionaries, among over one hundred and fifty, use pictorial illustrations. On the other hand, it has been mentioned several times in the literature (related to both printed and electronic reference works) that visual content makes a general dictionary more attractive for the user. Therefore a new methodology, enhancing graphical strategy in lexicography, would be proposed. Firstly, a thematic division of meanings will be applied to the authentic multimodal explanations taken from two general dictionaries (verbal definition and graphical facility). As a result, commonly illustrated thematic fields will be shown along with the ones used by lexicographers in a restrained way, as well as the fields left without illustrations for some reasons. The exemplary meanings from these latest, \"orphan\" groups will be confronted with the query results from the authentic multimodal corpora. Such a procedure will give us some more detailed information about the obstacles connected with illustrating this particular set of senses (for example multimodal denotation and connotation problems). Tradition du Dictionnaire versus Corpora d'Images : Quels Champs Thématiques du Vocabulaire Doivent Etre Illustrés? Les travaux de recherche les plus récents conduits par De Jong (2014) indiquèrent que seul très peu de dictionnaires académiques en Europe, parmi un peu plus de cent cinquante, utilisent des illustrations picturales. Cependant, il a été plusieurs fois mentionné dans la littérature lexicographique (s'agissant à la fois des ouvrages de référence sur papier comme des ouvrages de références électroniques) que le contenu visuel rend un dictionnaire général plus attrayant pour l'usager. De ce fait, le présent article tente de proposer une nouvelle méthodologie en vue de renforcer une stratégie graphique en lexicographie. Premièrement, une catégorisation thématique des sens des mots s'appliquera aux explications multimodales authentiques extraits de deux dictionnaires généraux (définition verbale et provision graphique). Conséquemment, des champs thématiques habituellement illustrés seront exposés, de même que ceux utilisés de façon restreinte par les lexicographes et ceux souvent laissés sans illustration pour diverses raisons. Des exemples des sens de ce groupe \"orphelin\" seront confrontés aux résultats d'une investigation des corpora authentique multimodaux. Cette procédure permettra d'obtenir des informations plus détaillées sur les obstacles qui empêchent d'illustrer un ensemble particulier des sens lexicaux (par exemple les problèmes de dénotation et connotation multimodales).
