The death room
Two weeks later, a French diamond courier, M. Valdagne, spent Friday night in Room 14. On Saturday morning, he was found hanging in the same manner and from the same hook as the unfortunate Mr. [Calvert]. Valdagne had the same look of horror on his face and his legs were also bent at the knees. He too could have saved his life by merely straightening his legs. It was a weird coincidence. Or was it? Police wondered if Valdagne had read details of the previous suicide and decided to copy them. Maybe he had been contemplating suicide and was drawn through the power of suggestion to kill himself in a similar manner. The Surete were informed that a similar suicide murder had taken place in London, England. It was believed there that a master criminal named Hanoi Shan was behind the murders. The Surete were convinced [Shan] was in cahoots with [Li Hang Foo]. What's more, they thought the victims had all inhaled some sort of gas which rendered them unconscious. Li Hang Foo had co-operated with Shan and his gang with the understanding he would be able to purchase the Hotel d'Amsterdam at a giveaway price when Mme Celestine was forced to sell. The murders in Room 14 had been profit motivated.
Enter the death room: Mme. Celestine offered a reward for the willing
[Shan] loved diamonds. As a result, he was drawn to the Hotel d'Amsterdam on Rue Lhomond, which, in 1906, was known to be frequented by diamond dealers from Antwerp and Amsterdam. The prosperous little hotel was owned by Madame [Celestine], a buxom French lady who was all business. On a sunny Wednesday, an Englishman named Calvert arrived at the Hotel d'Amsterdam. He was loaded down with diamonds, which he proudly displayed to Mme Celestine. Calvert was given Room 14. On the Friday following his arrival, he retired early. On Saturday morning, a waiter attempting to serve breakfast could get no response from Room 14. Mme Celestine was summoned and gained entrance to the locked room with her pass key. She took one look at Calvert and shouted, \"Il est mort!\" Two weeks later, a French diamond courier, M. Health Zone: ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS Who's got the POWER? ; We test cures for insomnia
The feet, she explained, allowed her to read the whole of the body. My insomnia, she said rather vaguely, was a side-effect of a specific problem and added that \"this in its turn causes its own side- effects\". Apparently, I hold a lot of tension in my stomach, which is a result of my erratic lifestyle and this affects my sleep and contributes to the migraines. [Adeline Tsang Prior] did not ask me whether I had any other health problems, and I didn't volunteer any information so nothing was mentioned about the allergies and migraines. She explained that reflexology would work on relaxing areas of tension and stimulating circulation. As the circulation helps to ensure a healthy, well- serviced body, it also combats stress and tension. This appeared to be true as, lying in the darkened room, I soon drifted off to sleep! Adeline explained that having a nap during treatment was quite common, even among her more uptight clients. On top of that, I do not make time to allow myself to relax. Attempting to kill two birds with one stone, [Nick Avery] prescribed a remedy that should help put me in a better frame of mind to be able to cope, and should help tackle my insomnia.
