Librarians at International Schools: An Exploratory Study
2026
International school librarians operate in diverse, multilingual environments characterized by frequent transitions in student and staff populations, which present unique professional challenges and opportunities (Golis, 2025; Reed, 2009). Despite the exponential growth of international schools globally (ISC Research, 2025; Pearce, 2023), there remains a notable gap in contemporary research and practitioner resources tailored to their library programs. This exploratory, community-engaged study addresses that gap by investigating international school librarians' evolving roles and challenges across multiple continents. Drawing on pre-focus groups, semi-structured interviews, and post-focus groups with experienced international school librarians, the study examines how libraries in international schools differ from those in national systems and how these differences shape day-to-day practice. Findings highlight the ways librarians navigate complex funding and governance structures, censorship and regulatory constraints, multilingual and home language collection development, and the expectations of highly mobile, culturally diverse communities. Participants described roles that blend instructional leadership, cross-cultural community building, and intricate operational management in areas such as acquisitions, digital access, and accreditation.

2019
\"Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve hoping to escape her stifling life in England. But small-town Kentucky quickly proves equally claustrophobic, especially living alongside her overbearing father-in-law. So when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt's new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically. The leader, and soon Alice's greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who's never asked a man's permission for anything. They will be joined by three other singular women who become known as the Horseback Librarians of Kentucky. What happens to them--and to the men they love--becomes a classic drama of loyalty, justice, humanity and passion. Though they face all kinds of dangers, they're committed to their job--bringing books to people who have never had any, sharing the gift of learning that will change their lives. Based on a true story rooted in America's past, The Giver of Stars is unparalleled in its scope. At times funny, at others heartbreaking, this is a richly rewarding novel of women's friendship, of true love, and of what happens when we reach beyond our grasp for the great beyond\"-- Provided by publisher.
Multisite collaboration using REDCap to capture library data
2019
In January 2018, library services at Providence St. Joseph Health merged to form a single, unified system, incorporating nine libraries and sixteen full-time staff. As a small, nonclinical team of librarians, we needed to make sure our work and value were visible to clinicians, administrators, and other nonlibrary stakeholders. Using REDCap, we developed a form to seamlessly collect statistics about our services.
