The next day : transitions, change, and moving forward
2025
\"In a rare window into some of her life's pivotal moments, Melinda French Gates draws from previously untold stories to offer a new perspective on encountering transitions. \"You don't get to be my age without navigating all kinds of transitions. Some you embraced and some you never expected. Some you hoped for and some you fought as hard as you could.\" - Melinda French Gates Transitions are moments in which we step out of our familiar surroundings and into a new landscape-a space that, for many people, is shadowed by confusion, fear, and indecision. The Next Day accompanies readers as they cross that space, offering guidance on how to make the most of the time between an ending and a new beginning and how to move forward into the next day when the ground beneath you is shifting. In this book, Melinda will reflect, for the first time in print, on some of the most significant transitions in her own life, including becoming a parent, the death of a dear friend, and her departure from the Gates Foundation. The stories she tells illuminate universal lessons about loosening the bonds of perfectionism, helping friends navigate times of crisis, embracing uncertainty, and more. Each one of us, no matter who we are or where we are in life, is headed toward transitions of our own. With her signature warmth and grace, Melinda candidly shares stories of times when she was in need of wisdom and shines a path through the open space stretching out before us all\"-- Provided by publisher.

In Lifecycle Events and Their Consequences: Job Loss, Family Change, and Declines in Health, editors Kenneth A. Couch, Mary C. Daly, and Julie Zissimopoulos bring together leading scholars to study the impact of unexpected life course events on economic welfare. The contributions in this volume explore how job loss, the onset of health limitations, and changes in household structure can have a pronounced influence on individual and household well-being across the life course. Although these events are typically studied in isolation, they frequently co-occur or are otherwise interrelated. This book provides a systematic empirical overview of these sometimes uncertain events and their impact. By placing them in a unified analytical framework and approaching each of them from a similar perspective, Lifecycle Events and Their Consequences illustrates the importance of a coherent approach to thinking about the inter-relationships among these shifts. Finally, this volume aims to set the future research agenda in this important area.
Transformative Physical Rehabilitation
2020
In adult physical rehabilitation, the transformative learning
theory presents the basis for a detailed model of Meaning
Perspective Transformation in Physical Rehabilitation based on
research evidence, with examples and cases, and presents directives
for clinical applications.
This book draws from the theoretical background of
transformative learning in adult education (Mezirow) to discuss the
expansion and transfer of knowledge to clinical rehabilitation and
community health rehabilitation settings for rehabilitation
interventions.
It also presents ground breaking findings of a fifteen-year
research project on the process of meaning perspective
transformation with client/patient groups. The project generated
the first model of transformative change in the field of physical
rehabilitation, built on the results of successive, externally
funded research projects completed for the first time with various
client populations undergoing interventions in occupational
therapy, physiotherapy, and other physical health rehabilitation
disciplines.
The book is written for clinicians, educators, and students of
physical rehabilitation, as well as for those who are interested in
helping a loved one deal with personal change.

Women and health : today's evidence tomorrow's agenda
2009
This is a report on women and health - both women's health needs and their contribution to the health of societies. Women's health has long been a concern for WHO, but today it has become an urgent priority. This report explains why. Using current data, it takes stock of what we know now about the health of women throughout their lives and across the different regions of the world. Highlighting key issues - some of which are familiar, others that merit far greater attention - the report identifies opportunities for making more rapid progress. It points to areas in which better information - plus policy dialogue at national, regional and international levels - could lead to more effective approaches.

The Handbook of Aging and the Social Sciences, Sixth Edition provides a comprehensive summary and evaluation of recent research on the social aspects of aging. The 25 chapters are divided into four sections discussing Aging and Time, Aging and Social Structure, Social Factors and Social Institutions, and Aging and Society. Within this context, aging is examined from the perspectives of many disciplines and professions including anthropology, bioethics, demography, economics, epidemiology, law, political science, psychology, and sociology. The Sixth Edition of the Handbook is virtually 100% new material. Seventeen chapters are on subjects not carried in the previous edition. Seven topics were carried over from the previous edition but written by new authors with fresh perspectives and brought up to date. Some of the exciting new topics include social relationships in late life, technological change and aging, religion and aging, lifestyle and aging, perceived quality of life, economic security in retirement, and aging and the law. There is also a greater emphasis on international perspectives, particularly in chapters on aging and politics, diversity and aging, and immigration. The Handbook will be of use to researchers and professional practitioners working with the aged. It is also suitable for use as a course text for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses on aging and the social sciences.
