On 21 September 1922, an eclipse of the Sun at Wallal in north-west Australia provided definitive proof that Einstein's theory of gravity is correct. It was accomplished through a heroic national and international effort, which deserves to be celebrated both as a scientific adventure and as one of the most important scientific measurements made in Australia in the 20th century. By proving that space is elastic, it paved the way for the discovery of gravitational waves in 2015, in which Australia also played a major role.
