China article reports on possibility of second N Korea nuclear test
in
Chuan, Lin
2006
Hong Kong, 17 October: The United States took a long time to confirm the DPRK's [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] act of nuclear testing after the DPRK conducted its underground nuclear test and there were all kinds of speculations as to whether or not the nuclear test was genuine. However, sources said US spy satellites detected suspicious movements of people and vehicles at the nuclear test site, indicating that Pyongyang could be preparing for a second nuclear test. The ROK and Japan have also received information indicating that Pyongyang was gearing up for another test. The US National Intelligence Director's Office issued a brief statement last Monday, confirming that the DPRK conducted an underground nuclear explosion on 9 October. Experts held that the DPRK finds itself locked in the horns of a dilemma on the question of whether or not to conduct another nuclear test. Technically speaking, conducting a nuclear test immediately after the first one is obviously good for the mastery of relevant nuclear technology. However, everything has its advantages as well as disadvantages. There are disadvantages if the DPRK insisted on conducting a second nuclear test: If the purpose is to \"weaponize\" the nuclear facility, continuing to push the nuclear test project forward is bound to pose a more severe provocation to the international community. The Bush administration will not sit by idly and remain indifferent to such despicable acts even though it is pinned down by the wars in Iran and Afghanistan. The Pyongyang regime will come under even greater pressure under such circumstances.
