The Drummond Girls : a story of fierce friendship beyond time and chance
\"An inspiring and heartfelt memoir about the friendship between eight women forged over two decades. The eight Drummond Girls first met in 1991 at Peegeo's Food & Spirits in northern Michigan where, at the time, they were all waitresses, bartenders, or regular customers. When one of them got engaged, they celebrated with a trip to Drummond Island-- their first trip together to the remote 36-mile chunk of rock, dive bars, dirt roads, and beautiful forests-- and it's where they became bonded forever.\" -- Provided by publisher.
Wireless Power Transfer Approaches for Medical Implants: A Review
2020
Wireless power transmission (WPT) is a critical technology that provides an alternative for wireless power and communication with implantable medical devices (IMDs). This article provides a study concentrating on popular WPT techniques for IMDs including inductive coupling, microwave, ultrasound, and hybrid wireless power transmission (HWPT) systems. Moreover, an overview of the major works is analyzed with a comparison of the symmetric and asymmetric design elements, operating frequency, distance, efficiency, and harvested power. In general, with respect to the operating frequency, it is concluded that the ultrasound-based and inductive-based WPTs have a low operating frequency of less than 50 MHz, whereas the microwave-based WPT works at a higher frequency. Moreover, it can be seen that most of the implanted receiver’s dimension is less than 30 mm for all the WPT-based methods. Furthermore, the HWPT system has a larger receiver size compared to the other methods used. In terms of efficiency, the maximum power transfer efficiency is conducted via inductive-based WPT at 95%, compared to the achievable frequencies of 78%, 50%, and 17% for microwave-based, ultrasound-based, and hybrid WPT, respectively. In general, the inductive coupling tactic is mostly employed for transmission of energy to neuro-stimulators, and the ultrasonic method is used for deep-seated implants.

Orderability of link quandles
2021
The paper develops a general theory of orderability of quandles with a focus on link quandles of tame links and gives some general constructions of orderable quandles. We prove that knot quandles of many fibred prime knots are right-orderable, whereas link quandles of most non-trivial torus links are not right-orderable. As a consequence, we deduce that the knot quandle of the trefoil is neither left nor right-orderable. Further, it is proved that link quandles of certain non-trivial positive (or negative) links are not bi-orderable, which includes some alternating knots of prime determinant and alternating Montesinos links. The paper also explores interconnections between orderability of quandles and that of their enveloping groups. The results establish that orderability of link quandles behaves quite differently than that of corresponding link groups.

2015
Link prediction is a popular research area with important applications in a variety of disciplines, including biology, social science, security, and medicine. The fundamental requirement of link prediction is the accurate and effective prediction of new links in networks. While there are many different methods proposed for link prediction, we argue that the practical performance potential of these methods is often unknown because of challenges in the evaluation of link prediction, which impact the reliability and reproducibility of results. We describe these challenges, provide theoretical proofs and empirical examples demonstrating how current methods lead to questionable conclusions, show how the fallacy of these conclusions is illuminated by methods we propose, and develop recommendations for consistent, standard, and applicable evaluation metrics. We also recommend the use of precision-recall threshold curves and associated areas in lieu of receiver operating characteristic curves due to complications that arise from extreme imbalance in the link prediction classification problem.

A Critical Review of Control Techniques for Flexible and Rigid Link Manipulators
2020
There is a high demand for developing effective controllers to perform fast and accurate operations for either flexible link manipulators (FLMs) or rigid link manipulators (RLMs). Thus, this paper is beneficial for such vast field, and it is also advantageous and indispensable for researchers who are interested in robotics to have sufficient knowledge about various controllers of FLMs and RLMs as the controllers’ concepts are elaborated in detail. The paper concentrates in critically reviewing classical controllers, intelligent controllers, robust controllers, and hybrid controllers for both FLMs and RLMs. The advantages and disadvantages of the aforementioned control methods are summarized in this paper; it also has a detailed comparison for the controllers in terms of the design difficulty, performance, and the suitability for controlling FLMs or RLMs.

2025
This paper clarified the optical fiber communication system links the performance signature for short-indoor applications. The electrical propagation delay time is investigated for copper links. The polystyrene optical link propagation delay time is also analyzed. The optical pulse broadening and the data transmission bit rates in the optical links are analyzed. The electrical/optical links performance is discussed with the variations of electrical/optical link variations and ambient temperature variations. The optical link performance efficiency has presented better performance than the electrical links, especially for short-indoor applications.

2021
Scientific software is a fundamental player in modern science, participating in all stages of scientific knowledge production. Software occasionally supports the development of trivial tasks, while at other instances it determines procedures, methods, protocols, results, or conclusions related with the scientific work. The growing relevance of scientific software as a research product with value of its own has triggered the development of quantitative science studies of scientific software. The main objective of this study is to illustrate a link-based webometric approach to characterize the online mentions to scientific software across different analytical frameworks. To do this, the bibliometric software VOSviewer is used as a case study. Considering VOSviewer’s official website as a baseline, online mentions to this website were counted in three different analytical frameworks: academic literature via Google Scholar (988 mentioning publications), webpages via Majestic (1,330 mentioning websites), and tweets via Twitter (267 mentioning tweets). Google scholar mentions shows how VOSviewer is used as a research resource, whilst mentions in webpages and tweets show the interest on VOSviewer’s website from an informational and a conversational point of view. Results evidence that URL mentions can be used to gather all sorts of online impacts related to non-traditional research objects, like software, thus expanding the analytical scientometric toolset by incorporating a novel digital dimension.

2022
Dynamic network link prediction is becoming a hot topic in network science, due to its wide applications in biology, sociology, economy and industry. However, it is a challenge since network structure evolves with time, making long-term prediction of adding/deleting links especially difficult. Inspired by the great success of deep learning frameworks, especially the convolution neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) network, we propose a novel end-to-end model with a Graph Convolution Network(GCN) embedded LSTM, named GC-LSTM, for dynamic network link prediction. Thereinto, LSTM is adopted as the main framework to learn the temporal features of all snapshots of a dynamic network. While for each snapshot, GCN is applied to capture the local structural properties of nodes as well as the relationship between them. One benefit is that our GC-LSTM can predict both added and removed links, making it more practical in reality, while most existing dynamic link prediction methods can only handle removed links. Extensive experiments demonstrated that GC-LSTM achieves outstanding performance and outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods.
