Agricultural productivity growth can simultaneously increase profit and reduce pollution. Yet, the impact of productivity growth on both has not been quantified. The objective of our study was to develop an approach to quantify the extent to which agricultural productivity growth can increase profit and reduce pollution. Focusing on nitrogen pollution, we applied the approach to a sample of 341 intensive Dutch dairy farms for the years 2006–2017. Using a Bennet–Lowe formulation, we measured economic and nitrogen productivities over time and across farms. We applied Data Envelopment Analysis to determine the potential for productivity growth from reducing economic and nitrogen inefficiencies and assessed the impact on profit and nitrogen pollution levels. Using a two-stage by-production model, we set profit maximisation as the overarching objective to account for the economic production behaviour of farmers. We found that if laggard farmers adopted the best practices of their best peers, they could on average increase annual gross profit by 34% and simultaneously reduce the N surplus by 50% during the time period, which is a win–win situation for farmers and the environment. The magnitude of these gains corroborates the suggestion that productivity growth could be a game-changer for agricultural sustainability.

We propose a correction to the coefficient of nuclear spin diffusion by a factor 1 / 1 − p ̄ 2 , where p ̄ is the average nuclear spin polarization. The correction, derived by extending the Lowe–Gade theory to low-temperature cases, implies that transportation of nuclear magnetization through nuclear spin diffusion accelerates when the system is hyperpolarized, whereas for low polarization the correction factor approaches unity and the diffusion coefficient coincides with the conventional diffusion coefficient valid in the high-temperature limit. The proposed scaling of the nuclear spin diffusion coefficient can lead to observable effects in the buildup of nuclear polarization by dynamic nuclear polarization.

Atypical phenotypes and novel OCRL variations in southern Chinese patients with Lowe syndrome

Background
Lowe syndrome is characterized by the presence of congenital cataracts, psychomotor retardation, and dysfunctional proximal renal tubules. This study presents a case of an atypical phenotype, investigates the genetic characteristics of eight children diagnosed with Lowe syndrome in southern China, and performs functional analysis of the novel variants.
Methods
Whole-exome sequencing was conducted on eight individuals diagnosed with Lowe syndrome from three medical institutions in southern China. Retrospective collection and analysis of clinical and genetic data were performed, and functional analysis was conducted on the five novel variants.
Results
In our cohort, the clinical symptoms of the eight Lowe syndrome individuals varied. One patient was diagnosed with Lowe syndrome but did not present with congenital cataracts. Common features among all patients included cognitive impairment, short stature, and low molecular weight proteinuria. Eight variations in the
OCRL
gene were identified, encompassing three previously reported and five novel variations. Among the novel variations, three nonsense mutations were determined to be pathogenic, and two patients harboring novel missense variations of uncertain significance exhibited severe typical phenotypes. Furthermore, all novel variants were associated with altered protein expression levels and impacted primary cilia formation.
Conclusion
This study describes the first case of an atypical Lowe syndrome patient without congenital cataracts in China and performs a functional analysis of novel variants in the
OCRL
gene, thereby expanding the understanding of the clinical manifestations and genetic diversity associated with Lowe syndrome.

Analyzing Components of Productivity Growth Using the Bennet-Lowe Indicator
This article introduces the Bennet-Lowe Total Factor Productivity (TFP) indicator. The proposed measure is difference-based, additively complete, and transitive. We also develop a general nonparametric framework to exhaustively decompose all Bennet-type TFP indicators, including the one introduced here, into technical change, technical efficiency change, scale efficiency change, and mix efficiency change. This decomposition provides a powerful tool for policy makers to guide financial decisions on research and development, extension, subsidies, and price support. The empirical application focuses on the Welsh sheep sector for the years 2001–2014. The results show that in this 14-year period, Welsh sheep farms increased their TFP by 30.28% on average (2.33% p.a.). However, the exhaustive decomposition shows that TFP growth is not distributed equally across all farms, with an increasing divergence between front-runners and laggards. The negative values of scale efficiency change and mix efficiency change cast doubt on the current subsidy policies.

Molecular cytogenetic characterization of isolated recurrent 4q35.2 microduplication in Chinese population: a seven-year single-center retrospective study

Background
With the extensive use of chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA), an increasing number of variants of uncertain significance (VOUS) have been detected. The objective of the present study was to elucidate the pathogenicity and clinical variability associated with isolated recurrent 4q35.2 microduplications within the Chinese population.
Methods
The present study involved 14 cases of isolated recurrent 4q35.2 microduplication (including 12 fetuses and 2 cases of pediatric patients) out of 5,188 subjects who sought genetic consultation at our hospital and received CMA detection. WES technology was subsequently utilized to identify additional sequence variants in a patient with multiple clinical anomalies.
Results
All 14 cases exhibited isolated recurrent 4q35.2 microduplications spanning a 1.0-Mb region encompassing the
ZFP42
gene. Among the 12 fetuses, 11 displayed normal clinical features, while one was born with renal duplication and hydronephrosis. Additionally, in the two pediatric patients, WES was performed for Case 1, who presented with congenital cataracts, severe intellectual disability, and seizures. This patient inherited the 4q35.2 microduplication from his phenotypically normal mother. WES identified a novel NM_000276:c.2042G > T (p.G681V) variant in the
OCRL
gene, which is associated with Lowe syndrome and may account for the observed phenotypic variability within this family.
Conclusion
A series of 14 cases with isolated recurrent 4q35.2 microduplications were investigated, highlighting a potential association with increased susceptibility to renal abnormalities. Further, the present findings may expand the mutation spectrum of the
OCRL
gene associated with Lowe syndrome and provide valuable insights for the genetic etiological diagnosis of patients with unexplained copy number variants.

Red Earth: Mallory Lowe Mpoka’s Haptic Archives

Fulton profiles second-generation Cameroonian-Belgian artist Mallory Lowe Mpoka who began experimenting with her family's photographic archives in her ongoing textile project Architecture of the Self: These Places that Live With(in) Us. Mpoka was summoned back to this place on her father's ancestral land by a weathered black and-white family photograph that pictures him in a crisp white boubou--a tunic traditionally worn by Cameroonian Muslims. Architecture of the Self combines experimentation with natural dyeing, screen-printing, embroidery, self-portraiture, cultural bricolage, and land-based learning as tools for the construction of diasporic identity. Mpoka reworks her family photographs haptically. In her studies of the visual archives of the African diaspora, Black feminist theorist and historian Tina Campt attends to the haptic dimensions of photographic images.
