A little overkill in probes of Probation Department
At the Massachusetts Statehouse, fafter the report of the Ware Commission, which looked into the patronage-laden hiring practices at the Probation Department, you have more people looking into the situation than you would have gotten at a sale at the old Filene's Basement, now merely a huge hole in the ground in downtown Boston. (Now that's something that deserves an investigation.) Part of this is rush to investigate the Probation Department on the heels of the Ware Commission report is legitimate, and part of this is a CYA strategy on behalf of Gov. Deval Patrick, Senate President Therese Murray and House Speaker Robert DeLeo. Each of these three leaders have appointed three members to their Statehouse committee, which is charged with delving into the hiring practices of the department and coming up with recommendations for reform. We are not through. Attorney General Martha Coakley has assigned a team of prosecutors to \"aggressively pursue\" any violations of law in the hiring practices at the Probation Department, while U.S. Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz, who has sharper elbows than Coakley, has empaneled a grand jury to look into \"allegations relating to violations of certain federal statutes.\"
