Landslides triggered by an extraordinary rainfall event in Central Italy on September 15, 2022

Timely and systematic collection of landslide information after a triggering event is pivotal for the definition of landslide trends in response to climate change. On September 15, 2022, a large part of central Italy, particularly Marche and Umbria regions, was struck by an anomalous rainfall event that showed characteristics of a persistent convective system. An extraordinary cumulated rainfall of 419 mm was recorded by a rain gauge in the area in only 9 h. The rainfall triggered 1687 landslides in the area affected by the peak rainfall intensity and caused widespread flash floods and floods in the central and lower parts of the catchments. In this work, we describe the characteristics of the landslides identified during a field survey started immediately after the event. Most of the mass movements are shallow, and many are rapid (i.e., debris flows, earth flows) and widely affecting the road network. Landslide area spans from a few tens of square meters to 105 m2, with a median value of 87 m2. Field evidence revealed diffuse residual risk conditions, being a large proportion of landslides located in the immediate vicinity of infrastructures. Besides reporting the spatial distribution of landslides triggered by an extreme rainfall event, the data collected on landslides can be used to make comparisons with the distribution of landslides in the past, validation of landslide susceptibility models, and definition of the general interaction between landslides and structures/infrastructures.

Good Jobs, Bad Jobs provides an insightful analysis of how and why precarious employment is gaining ground in the labor market and the role these developments have played in the decline of the middle class. Kalleberg shows that by the 1970s, government deregulation, global competition, and the rise of the service sector gained traction, while institutional protections for workers—such as unions and minimum-wage legislation—weakened. Together, these forces marked the end of postwar security for American workers. The composition of the labor force also changed significantly; the number of dual-earner families increased, as did the share of the workforce comprised of women, non-white, and immigrant workers. Of these groups, blacks, Latinos, and immigrants remain concentrated in the most precarious and low-quality jobs, with educational attainment being the leading indicator of who will earn the highest wages and experience the most job security and highest levels of autonomy and control over their jobs and schedules. Kalleberg demonstrates, however, that building a better safety net—increasing government responsibility for worker health care and retirement, as well as strengthening unions—can go a long way toward redressing the effects of today’s volatile labor market. There is every reason to expect that the growth of precarious jobs—which already make up a significant share of the American job market—will continue. Good Jobs, Bad Jobs deftly shows that the decline in U.S. job quality is not the result of fluctuations in the business cycle, but rather the result of economic restructuring and the disappearance of institutional protections for workers. The Jurassic structure of the northern sector of Foligno mountains (Central Italy)

This study examines the Jurassic palaeogeography and tectonic evolution of the northern Foligno mountains. A 1:10,000-scale geological survey highlights the impact of Jurassic extensional faulting on depositional environments. Persistent bathymetric differences due to faulting existed as early as the Early Jurassic within the Calcare Massiccio carbonate platform, but fault-bounded structural highs formed only after the platform fragmentation. The main raised structure (Sasso di Pale - Ponte Santa Lucia) can be interpreted as a horst-like feature, bordered by antithetic ESE-WNW faults, with a gently tilted surface affected by sliding processes and edge erosion. The faults reached a total throw of over 500 m already during the Early Jurassic, forming steep escarpments only in part buried by sedimentation. During the Middle and Late Jurassic, these fault scarps protruded 150-200 m above the sea floor, and their prolonged exposure resulted in decompression-related fracturing and block detachments.

Geology of the Mt. Cosce sector (Narni Ridge, Central Apennines, Italy)

This paper is companion to a 1:15,000 scale geological map of the southern sector of the Narni Range in Central Italy. This sector of the Apenninic Chain was affected by the western Tethyan rifting stage during the Early Jurassic, and the inherited architectural setting in turn influenced the Mesozoic stratigraphy and the Neogene-Quaternary tectonic evolution of the area. Based on stratigraphic and structural field evidence, a Jurassic structural high has been identified in the Mt. Cosce sector, flanked northward and westward by deeper basins. The basin that had to exist to the east, as well as the top of the horst-block, cannot be observed due to recent erosion and orogenic deformation. The western margin of the Mt. Cosce High was rejuvenated during an extensional tectonic phase which took place in the late Early Cretaceous. This syn-sedimentary faulting is reported in this area for the first time, and is documented by a sedimentary breccia (Mt. Cosce Breccia) resting unconformably on the Jurassic footwall-block.

Extreme precipitation trends and events are fundamental for the definition of the region’s climate and allow the subsequent analysis of the risk for the territory and the possible countermeasures. This study takes into account the Marche Region (Central Italy) with 128 rain gauges from 1921 to 2017. Initially, in order to obtain a rainfall overview, the dominant trend of the period 1921–2017 was evaluated. In addition, to obtain a comparable analysis, the average precipitations grouped in climatological standard normals were analyzed. Finally, the main purpose of the research was achieved by analyzing extreme events in the middle Adriatic side. In addition, forecasts of extreme precipitation events, with a return period of 100 years, were made using the theory of “generalized extreme value” (GEV). The innovation of this research is represented by the use of geostatistics to spatialize the variables investigated, through a clear and immediate graphic representation performed through GIS software. This study is a necessary starting point for the study of climate dynamics in the region, and it is also a useful tool for land use planning.

Effects of laughter therapy versus walking on prenatal attachment and mental well-being of pregnant women

This study aimed to comparatively reveal the effects of laughter therapy versus walking on prenatal attachment and mental well-being of pregnant women. The sample was identified through snowball sampling among eligible pregnant women and subsequently randomized into the laughter therapy and walking groups using random.org. This randomized controlled experimental study was conducted with 78 pregnant women (40 received laughter therapy, 38 walked regularly) in their 20-30th weeks of pregnancy. The study was conducted between April 25th, 2024, and June 25th, 2024. The pregnant women in the laughter therapy group received 20–30-minute laughter therapy sessions once a week for 8 weeks. The pregnant women in the walking group were given a walking program to follow for 8 weeks. In the laughter therapy group, the post-test Prenatal Attachment scores and the mean Mental Well-Being scores were found to be statistically significantly higher than in the walking group (Cohen d=0.59 ≈ 0.50; Cohen d=0.94 ≈ 1.0, respectively). We concluded that pregnant women who received laughter therapy had higher levels of prenatal attachment and mental well-being than those who walked.
Cette étude visait à comparer les effets de la rhétorique et de la marche sur l'attachement prénatal et le bien-être mental des femmes enceintes. L'échantillon a été constitué par la méthode d'échantillonnage en boule de neige parmi les femmes enceintes éligibles, puis réparti aléatoirement en deux groupes : thérapie par le rire et marche, à l'aide du site random.org. Cette étude expérimentale randomisée contrôlée a été menée auprès de 78 femmes enceintes (40 ayant bénéficié de la rhétorique et 38 ayant pratiqué la marche régulière) entre la 20e et la 30e semaine de grossesse. L'étude s'est déroulée du 25 avril au 25 juin 2024. Les femmes enceintes du groupe rhétorique ont bénéficié de séances de 20 à 30 minutes de rhétorique une fois par semaine pendant 8 semaines. Les femmes enceintes du groupe marche ont suivi un programme de marche pendant 8 semaines. Dans le groupe rhétorique, les scores d'attachement prénatal post-test et les scores moyens de bien-être mental étaient statistiquement significativement plus élevés que dans le groupe marche (D de Cohen = 0,59 ≈ 0,50 ; d de Cohen = 0,94 ≈ 1,0, respectivement). Nous avons conclu que les femmes enceintes qui bénéficiaient d'une thérapie par le rire présentaient des niveaux d'attachement prénatal et de bien-être mental plus élevés que celles qui marchaient.

Geological Map of the Frasassi Gorge

This work presents a new 1:10,000-scale geological map of the Frasassi area (central Italy), integrating recent surface and cave surveys. The map is complemented by new data on the lithostratigraphic characterisation of the Calcare Massiccio Formation (MAS), which forms the core of the local Jurassic structural high. This refined analysis allows for a more detailed subdivision of the MAS and better correlation with the overlying condensed Jurassic succession (BU) and surrounding Maiolica Formation (MAI). The map documents the complex tectono-sedimentary contacts between these units, highlighting the geometry of the MAS–MAI boundary and the occurrence of neptunian dykes both at the surface and within the cave system. The proposed structural interpretation suggests that the Frasassi high was an elongated NW–SE block bounded by conjugate oblique-slip normal faults later reactivated during folding. The results refine the understanding of Jurassic paleogeography and post-Jurassic deformation in the northern Apennines and provide an updated framework to support future geological studies in the area.
