Detecting small objects is a challenging task. We focus on a special case: the detection and classification of traffic signals in street views. We present a novel framework that utilizes a visual attention model to make detection more efficient, without loss of accuracy, and which generalizes. The attention model is designed to generate a small set of candidate regions at a suitable scale so that small targets can be better located and classified. In order to evaluate our method in the context of traffic signal detection, we have built a traffic light benchmark with over 15,000 traffic light instances, based on Tencent street view panoramas. We have tested our method both on the dataset we have built and the Tsinghua–Tencent 100K (TT100K) traffic sign benchmark. Experiments show that our method has superior detection performance and is quicker than the general faster RCNN object detection framework on both datasets. It is competitive with state-of-the-art specialist traffic sign detectors on TT100K, but is an order of magnitude faster. To show generality, we tested it on the LISA dataset without tuning, and obtained an average precision in excess of 90%.

THE skipper of the Derry/Londonderry Clipper has described how the yacht was tossed about \"like a bucking bronco on steroids\" as the crew push west to their home port. Mr [Mark Light] said: \"What a difference a day makes. Yesterday we were hard on the wind, boat heeled at 30 degrees, constant drenching from sea water crashing over the bow and cascading down the decks towards us, 35 knots apparent wind, large awkward seas and two reefs, staysail and a storm jib flying. \"Today, we have full main, Yankee 1 and staysail, 18 knots wind over the deck, flat seas and even some sunshine.\"

The Derry boat's rival, Gold Coast Australia, pipped them over the starting buoy but Derry remained hot on their heels as they sailed out into open water overnight and into yesterday morning. He said: \"I am absolutely delighted to have got the job. It didn't sink in initially when I got the phone call but then the emails started coming through and it's now all very real. It's amazing -- a great feeling.\" Derry's participation will mark one of the city's biggest celebrations in the lead up to the city's celebrations as UK City of Culture 2013. He said: \"Being able to lead a crew around the world in a yacht race, for me, takes everything to the next level. It will be so satisfying to watch a group of people put together randomly at first, progress with lots of hard work and training and evolve into a highly competitive race team and group of very accomplished offshore sailors. I will be very proud to carry out that job.\" Mark now lives on the Isle of Wight and hopes to celebrate his 40th birthday somewhere in the Southern Ocean, racing Derry's yacht to victory.

LETTERS: WILL SCHUSTER SUSTAIN INTEREST?
in
Light, Mark
2003
The \"worst\" happens when you put everything that this community faces in perspective. During the past several years, I'd guess that we've invested well in excess of $500 million in downtown Dayton - from Fifth Third Field to the RiverScape project to the RTA center to the Victoria Theatre renovation. Before that, countless millions were invested in everything from the Dayton Convention Center renovation to the Flyover sculpture to Dave Hall Plaza to the Private Fair memorial. Even earlier, we can point to Courthouse Square, the YMCA riverfront amphitheater, the Arcade and the floating gazebo. It doesn't take a visionary to notice Dayton's lack of long-term interest in anything. The Convention Center is an embarrassment of ugliness, Flyover looks incomplete, the Arcade is closed, the YMCA riverfront hasn't seen a soul in 20 years, the gazebo capsized and the Private Fair memorial is infested with weeds. SHILOH CRAWFORD III/DAYTON DAILY NEWS THE COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE at the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center brought an estimated 70,000 people to downtown Dayton on Sunday.
