Finding answers; South Hill genetics clinic has been helping families pinpoint disorders for 30 years
2005
Finally, a new pediatrician sent [Brittney Bohn] to the Inland Northwest Genetics Clinic, a nonprofit organization that diagnoses genetic problems and provides counseling and education to patients. During Brittney's first appointment, Dr. Jude Martin suspected what was wrong. The genetics clinic has been helping families pinpoint disorders and diseases since 1975 - a decade before genetic fingerprinting was first used in the courts and almost 20 years before the first genetically engineered foods were approved. The clinic will celebrate its 30th anniversary this winter without fanfare; it simply will continue its work with patients at its South Hill offices. The Inland Northwest Genetics Clinic still is the only such clinic between here and Seattle, and it serves patients from throughout the region regardless of their ability to pay, Martin said. Genetic testing is expensive, so it's unique that the clinic is a nonprofit and not affiliated with a medical school, she said.

OBITUARY; Young brought gentleness to causes
2006
A memorial service will be held today in Madison for Margaret Young, who as a nun in the 1960s was swept up in the civil rights movement, marching with such figures as Father James Groppi and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. She was born Margaret Mary Sery, June 25, 1938, in Milwaukee to John Henry and Anna Maria Sery. She graduated from St. John Cathedral High School in 1956 and immediately joined the School Sisters of St. Francis. She marched with Groppi and King during civil rights demonstrations in the 1960s but won more people over to her cause with her gentle demeanor, her sister Joan Bohn said.

ISU is conducting an interesting search. The three publicly identified finalists are Oklahoma associate A.D. Bruce Van De Velde, Oklahoma State associate A.D. David Martin and South Florida A.D. Paul Griffin. ISU has a hush-hush list that includes [Mike Bohn], who will interview Sunday in Denver. San Jose State A.D. Chuck Bell is believed to be a candidate.
