Your Pocket Is What Cures You
2009,2010,2019
In the wake of structural adjustment programs in the 1980s and health reforms in the 1990s, the majority of sub-Saharan African governments spend less than ten dollars per capita on health annually, and many Africans have limited access to basic medical care. Using a community-level approach, anthropologist Ellen E. Foley analyzes the implementation of global health policies and how they become intertwined with existing social and political inequalities in Senegal.Your Pocket Is What Cures Youexamines qualitative shifts in health and healing spurred by these reforms, and analyzes the dilemmas they create for health professionals and patients alike. It also explores how cultural frameworks, particularly those stemming from Islam and Wolof ethnomedicine, are central to understanding how people manage vulnerability to ill health.
While offering a critique of neoliberal health policies,Your Pocket Is What Cures Youremains grounded in ethnography to highlight the struggles of men and women who are precariously balanced on twin precipices of crumbling health systems and economic decline. Their stories demonstrate what happens when market-based health reforms collide with material, political, and social realities in African societies.
A practical approach to using statistics in health research : from planning to reporting
\"This book provides an outline with methodological steps of how to use statistics to analyze your research data. The book begins with a general introduction, which discusses what you should be trying to achieve with your statistical analysis. This involves describing the subjects you investigated and their outcomes, determining whether there is statistically significant evidence of differences in outcomes between groups of subjects, quantitatively describing effect sizes, and also determining whether any changes are large enough to be of clinical significance. Next, the authors cover data types and choosing statistical tests. This includes identifying the factor and outcome, and also identifying the type of data used to record the outcome. Readers are then introduced to multiple testing, the Chi-square test, and independent samples and the two-sample t-test. The Man-Whitney test is discussed, as well as the One-way ANOVA. Readers are taught how to Carrying out the Kruskal-Wallis test and the McNemar's test. The Paired t-test is covered, as well as how to carry out the Wilcoxon paired samples test. Readers are shown how to carry out the repeated measures ANOVA and the Friedman test. This includes discussion of merits of change in median, change in proportions in categories, and changes in high/low categories. The book concludes with a discussion on correlation and regression methods, and a detailed analysis on Cronbach's alpha\"-- Provided by publisher.
In the Public Interest
2012,2020
How do we know when physicians practice medicine safely? Can we trust doctors to discipline their own? What is a proper role of experts in a democracy? In the Public Interestraises these provocative questions, using medical licensing and discipline to advocate for a needed overhaul of how we decide public good in a society dominated by private interest groups. Throughout the twentieth century, American physicians built a powerful profession, but their drive toward professional autonomy has made outside observers increasingly concerned about physicians' ability to separate their own interests from those of the general public.Ruth Horowitz traces the history of medical licensure and the mechanisms that democratic societies have developed to certify doctors to deliver critical services. Combining her skills as a public member of medical licensing boards and as an ethnographer, Horowitz illuminates the workings of the crucial public institutions charged with maintaining public safety. She demonstrates the complex agendas different actors bring to board deliberations, the variations in the board authority across the country, the unevenly distributed institutional resources available to board members, and the difficulties non-physician members face as they struggle to balance interests of the parties involved. In the Public Interestsuggests new procedures, resource allocation, and educational initiatives to increase physician oversight. Horowitz makes the case for regulations modeled after deliberative democracy that promise to open debates to the general public and allow public members to take a more active part in the decision-making process that affects vital community interests.

Well : what we need to talk about when we talk about health
\"In a stirring and radical new treatise from one of America's most respected voices in health and medicine, Well examines the subtle factors that determine who gets to be healthy in the United States. Physician Sandro Galea reckons with our country's many fraught relationships--with history, money, pain, and pleasure, which are in turn augmented by factors like luck, compassion, and values--in terms of how they determine the health of those in the world's richest country. Well represents a radical new approach to Americans' ingrained understanding of health. It examines the forces that are not typically part of the health discussion--but should be--and is a clarion call for where the country goes from here\"-- Provided by publisher.
Medical tourism and transnational health care
\"Medicine and tourism have become separated in contemporary popular consciousness. The former implies anything but a pleasurable experience and the latter presumes a healthy disposition for participation. We argue that this popular conception of the separation of tourism and medicine ignores an historical continuity of lineage from the 18th century pursuit of a 'cure' at resorts and spas, to 20th century notions of holidays as worker welfare through to global patient mobility in the quest for cutting-edge medical interventions in so-called 'untreatable' conditions. Disciplinary divisions within the academy have reinforced the separation between medicine and tourism in popular culture, but there is now an emergent challenge to re-think the medicine/tourism nexus. Under the influence of transnational health care consumption, two very contrasting traditions of Western thought are now confronting one another. This book provides a comprehensive landscape of diverse research communities' attempts to capture its implications for existing bodies of knowledge in selected aspects of medicine, medical ethics, health policy and management, and tourism studies\"-- Provided by publisher.
