Archive of the Matrimonial Court of Sălişte. Sources for the History of Women in Modern Transylvania
Very little is known about the family life of Transylvanian women in the modern era. The main explanation is related to the insufficient exploitation of sources. Due to the richness, variety and complexity of the judicial-ecclesiastical archives, we have started building a database on divorce in Airtable based on records from the Sălişte, the main village of Mărginimea Sibiului, which has a unique, well-preserved documentary heritage. The ecclesiastical archive is kept at the Museum of the Orthodox Deanery of Sălişte in good condition, undamaged. Although the dissolution of marriage was a marginal phenomenon, the time has come to open the discussion for a debate on the sources and to take some steps forward in this research avenue. The article provides a description of the most important documents related to divorce, with a focus on content, structure, form, style, classification. The advantages but also the limits of matrimonial files are presented, which place the analysis scheme on the border between family history, historical demography, history of law, history of women, history of the church, rural history, history of feelings. The quality of the sources gives us the opportunity to identify divorce patterns characteristic of a highly individualized region within the Transylvanian area.
“Bâlciul From Cazarme” in Fometesti Commune, Vâlcea County
History is the most complex part of human existence. Its research can provide a more accurate picture of society as a whole, of the level of culture and civilization. The history of the village of Fometești has not been the subject of a complete work in Romanian historiography. This article seeks to reconstruct an important event in the history of these lands—\"Bâlciul de la Cazarme\"—and constitutes a starting point for further research that will be able to develop, nuance, or refine the information gathered here.
Powstańcza działalność Mariana Dubieckiego – sekretarza Rusi w Rządzie Narodowym 1863 roku
The aim of the article is to present the insurgent activity of Marian Dubiecki, secretary of Ruthenia in the Polish National Government of January Uprising. During his tenure, he was one of Romuald Traugutt’s closest collaborators, occupying the outbuilding next to his apartment, and a person who introduced the later dictator at the meeting of The Polish National Government. Dubiecki’s duties included correspondence with other representatives of the insurgent administration and negotiations with the “Progressive Ruthenia Group”. After minister of state Józef Kajetan Janowski left Warsaw, the secretary of Ruthenia undertook action to combine both functions. As a result of his insurgent activity, Marian Dubiecki was arrested and sentenced to exile, from which he returned in 1883. The figure of the secretary of Ruthenia has not yet been the subject of an extensive historiographical research that would comprehensively analyze his biography.
The Village of Fometesti - an Oasis of Life Under the Lid of the Southern Carpathians
This article seeks to compile a history of the village of Fometesti, focusing on the main historical moments recorded in chronicles and documents. The village of Fometesti is located at the foot of Mulți Meridionali, on both sides of the Cerna River. There are not many documents that help in the elaboration of a precise history of this village, but their corroboration with the local tradition transmitted by living speech supports the elaboration of a viable historical course.
Kiedy poniosą emocje – przypadki nieregulaminowych zachowań żołnierzy afroamerykańskich oraz ich karania w okresie wojny secesyjnej w świetle sprawozdań głównych sądów wojskowych
Despite the fact, that it has been over 160 years since the end of the Civil War, this conflict is still causing some emotions among the historians. It is mainly due to its complex character. The war was conducted simultaneously on several levels, and each one was an additional source of emotions. This article will focus on one of them in particular – i.e. in what way the race relations affected the behaviour of black soldiers during the Civil War, and to what extent we should consider discrimination as a contributing factor in cases of violation of army regulations. This issue will be investigated by analysing the proceedings of General Courts-Martial of the 9th Corps of the Army of the Potomac.
Powstanie narodowe czy bunt rekrutów? Rozkład wojsk austriackich w 1809 roku w Galicji
The Polish-Austrian War of 1809 is usually perceived as a regular military conflict between the Duchy of Warsaw, which was part of the Napoleonic Europe, and the Habsburg Monarchy. However, overthrowing the Austrian government in the lands of the Polish partition (Galicia) was largely related to the independence protests of the local Polish population. Among them, the Galician recruits played an important role. A significant number of conscripts from Galicia were involved in the rebellion against the Austrian army. It involved mass as well as individual desertions, surrender into captivity without a fight, and finally a group defection to the enemy’s side. This way, the Austrian army lost approximately 15,000 men in Galicia. This rebellion had social and anti-militaristic grounds, but also resulted from the sympathy of wider circles of Galician population towards the Napoleonic socio-political system. It was primarily perceived as “freedom” and the abolition of existing feudal relations. For Galician recruits, these were positive values, reinforced by the image of the Napoleonic army as a guarantor of modernization processes. The rebellion of Galician recruits in 1809 in the lands of the Austrian partition can therefore be assessed as a Polish independence movement, but also as a chaotic uprising against the feudal and absolutist Habsburg monarchy. The latter factor was probably more important, but it objectively contributed to Austria losing part of its territory to the Duchy of Warsaw.
