Screens are ubiquitous today. They display information; present image worlds; are portable; connect to mobile networks; mesmerize. However, contemporary screen media also seek to eliminate the presence of the screen and the visibilities of its boundaries. As what is image becomes increasingly indistinguishable against the viewer’s actual surroundings, this unsettling prompts re-examination about not only what is the screen, but also how the screen demarcates and what it stands for in relation to our understanding of our realities in, outside and against images. Through case studies drawn from three media technologies – Virtual Reality; holograms; and light projections – this book develops new theories of the surfaces on and spaces in which images are displayed today, interrogating critical lines between art and life; virtuality and actuality; truth and lies. What we have today is not just the contestation of the real against illusion or the unreal, but the disappearance itself of difference and a gluttony of the unreal which both connect up to current politics of distorted truth values and corrupted terms of information. The Post-Screen Through Virtual Reality, Holograms and Light Projections: Where Screen Boundaries Lie is thus about not only where the image’s borders and demarcations are established, but also the screen boundary as the instrumentation of today’s intense virtualizations that do not tell the truth. In all this, a new imagination for images emerges, with a new space for cultures of presence and absence, definitions of object and representation, and understandings of dis- and re-placement – the post-screen.

An intelligent multimedia information system for multimodal content extraction and querying

This paper introduces an intelligent multimedia information system, which exploits machine learning and database technologies. The system extracts semantic contents of videos automatically by using the visual, auditory and textual modalities, then, stores the extracted contents in an appropriate format to retrieve them efficiently in subsequent requests for information. The semantic contents are extracted from these three modalities of data separately. Afterwards, the outputs from these modalities are fused to increase the accuracy of the object extraction process. The semantic contents that are extracted using the information fusion are stored in an intelligent and fuzzy object-oriented database system. In order to answer user queries efficiently, a multidimensional indexing mechanism that combines the extracted high-level semantic information with the low-level video features is developed. The proposed multimedia information system is implemented as a prototype and its performance is evaluated using news video datasets for answering content and concept-based queries considering all these modalities and their fused data. The performance results show that the developed multimedia information system is robust and scalable for large scale multimedia applications.

The Past, Present, and Future of the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning

The cognitive theory of multimedia learning (Mayer, 2021, 2022), which seeks to explain how people learn academic material from words and graphics, has developed over the past four decades. Although the name and graphical representation of the theory have evolved over the years, the core ideas have been constant—dual channels (i.e., humans have separate information processing channels for verbal and visual information), limited capacity (i.e., processing capacity is severely limited), and active processing (i.e., meaningful learning involves selecting relevant material to be processed in working memory, mentally organizing the material into coherent verbal and visual structures, and integrating them with each other and with relevant knowledge activated from long-term memory). This review describes how the theory has developed (i.e., the past), the current state of the theory (i.e., the present), and new directions for future development (i.e., the future). In addition, the review includes examples of the events and findings that led to changes in the theory. Implications for educational psychology are discussed, including 15 evidence-based principles of multimedia design.
