The Conservation Status of the Barbary Macaque (Macaca sylvanus) in Algeria: Population Estimates and Human Impacts
The Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus), the only African macaque and an endangered species, faces significant conservation challenges. By compiling both published and unpublished data, this review aims to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the current state of knowledge on the Barbary macaque in Algeria, with a specific focus on (1) geographic distribution and population estimates, and (2) anthropogenic threats. We reviewed 409 studies and identified 41 relevant to the Algerian context. Our findings update population estimates, revealing over 9000 individuals across national parks such as Djurdjura, Gouraya, and Chréa. We also document new presence data of the species in Skikda and Jijel. Finally, an analysis of the available studies on the impact of anthropogenic activities on the species in Algeria shows that the primary factors affecting macaques include habitat loss, overgrazing, illegal trade, road mortality, and tourism-related disease transmission. While species monitoring has improved, many forest regions remain understudied. We call for expanded systematic research and conservation efforts, particularly in unsurveyed habitats such as the Akfadou and Guerrouche forests and Babors-Tababort National Park. By integrating diverse data sources, this review supports the need for evidence-based conservation of M. sylvanus in Algeria and highlights its critical role in North African biodiversity.
Responses to social and environmental stress are attenuated by strong male bonds in wild macaques
In humans and obligatory social animals, individuals with weak social ties experience negative health and fitness consequences. The social buffering hypothesis conceptualizes one possible mediating mechanism: During stressful situations the presence of close social partners buffers against the adverse effects of increased physiological stress levels. We tested this hypothesis using data on social (rate of aggression received) and environmental (low temperatures) stressors in wild male Barbary macaques ( Macaca sylvanus ) in Morocco. These males form strong, enduring, and equitable affiliative relationships similar to human friendships. We tested the effect of the strength of a male’s top three social bonds on his fecal glucocorticoid metabolite (fGCM) levels as a function of the stressors’ intensity. The attenuating effect of stronger social bonds on physiological stress increased both with increasing rates of aggression received and with decreasing minimum daily temperature. Ruling out thermoregulatory and immediate effects of social interactions on fGCM levels, our results indicate that male Barbary macaques employ a tend-and-befriend coping strategy in the face of increased environmental as well as social day-to-day stressors. This evidence of a stress-ameliorating effect of social bonding among males under natural conditions and beyond the mother–offspring, kin or pair bond broadens the generality of the social buffering hypothesis. Significance Male macaques form social bonds similar to human friendships that buffer them against day-to-day stressors. If male primates live in multimale groups they usually fight fiercely over access to females, but males can develop friendly relationships with a few group mates. The strength of these “friendships” has now been shown to buffer against the negative effects of social and environmental stressors, a phenomenon that was previously only described for females and pair-living animals. Long-term glucocorticoid (stress hormone) elevation can increase susceptibility to disease and mortality. This study shows that variation in everyday stressors such as the amount of aggression received or cold stress can cause such long-term elevated glucocorticoid levels but that keeping a few close male associates will avoid that.
Assessing the Effects of Tourist Provisioning on the Health of Wild Barbary Macaques in Morocco
Feeding wildlife is a very popular tourist activity, largely because it facilitates the close observation of animals in their natural habitat. Such provisioning may benefit animals by improving their survival and reproductive success, especially during periods of natural food shortage. However, provisioning by tourists may also have negative impacts on the health of the animals involved; to date such impacts are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of tourist provisioning on the health of wild adult Barbary macaques, Macaca sylvanus, in Morocco. We compared health measures between a heavily provisioned group and a group that received negligible food from tourists and, in the former group, we also assessed health measures in relation to the intensity of provisioning. We used a broad range of non-invasive health measures relating to birth rate and survival, disease and injury risk, body size and condition, and physiological stress. Our findings indicate that feeding by tourists may overall have negative impacts on the health of Barbary macaques, being linked in particular to larger body size, elevated stress levels and more alopecia. Finally, we propose a framework to help consider the potential costs and benefits of provisioning, which may facilitate future research and management decisions on whether-and how much-provisioning is acceptable.
Is Diet Flexibility an Adaptive Life Trait for Relictual and Peri-Urban Populations of the Endangered Primate Macaca sylvanus?: e0118596
Habitat loss, fragmentation and urban expansion may drive some species to marginal habitats while others succeed in exploiting urban areas. Species that show dietary flexibility are more able to take advantage of human activities to supplement their diet with anthropogenically abundant and accessible resources. The Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus) is an endangered species due to the loss of its habitat, and human pressure. The population of Gouraya National Park (Algeria) lives in a relictual habitat that constitutes about 0.6% of the species range. In addition, this population is a unique case where urban expansion favours contact zones between Barbary macaque habitats and a big city (Bejaia). We quantified the dietary composition of Gouraya macaques over an annual cycle with the objective to understand how diet flexibility of this species may help it adapt to a relictual habitat or cope with urban expansion. We recorded the phenology of plant species every month. This study shows that Gouraya macaques, compared to those living in other forest types of the distribution area, are under lower seasonal constraints. They consume a greater amount of fruit and seeds that are available throughout much of the year, and a lesser amount of costly to find and extract subterranean foods. Therefore the Gouraya relictual habitat appears as a favourable environment compared to other major habitats of that species. This study also shows that colonizing peri-urban zones increases the availability and species richness of diet resources for Barbary macaques as they consume more human foods and exotic plants than in farther sites. Adult males eat more human foods than adult females and immatures do. The exploitation of high-energy anthropogenic food could favour macaque population growth and expansion towards the city center associated with human/macaque conflicts. We recommend applying management actions to restore macaques back to their natural habitat.
Decolonizing Primate Conservation Practice: A Case Study from North Morocco
Understanding the historical context of an area enables an incoming conservationist to reflect on their role in communities and to better position themselves both politically and socially within them. Here, we explore how outside agencies and institutions, including a former colonial power, have affected and influenced local communities who share their landscape with Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) in Bouhachem forest, north Morocco. In the context of initiating Barbary macaque conservation activities, we interviewed representatives from local governmental and nongovernmental organizations, city dwellers, and villagers about the historical, political, and social context of the study site. We found that villages around Bouhachem were politically and socially marginalized and discriminated against by the state and urban society. The existence of these divisions and the outside agencies’ simplistic view of villages as homogeneous communities negatively influenced conservation interventions, because people resisted initiatives imposed on them without prior consultation. We found that Bouhachem villagers have been, and still are, excluded from meaningful participation in the conservation of the forest and this finding encouraged us to decolonize our own practice. We engaged meaningfully with members of the surrounding communities and responded to news of erroneous stories about our activities by developing a project working in three villages that included all households. Based on our experiences, we recommend that all conservationists conduct historical and qualitative research to gain a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the communities they work in. This understanding should encourage conservationists to recognize their own social and cultural biases and to decolonize their practice. Attending to our own position may help us to avoid underestimating and alienating people who view conservation actions through a very different but equally valid lens.التخلص من التداعيات الاستعمارية في المحافظة على الرئيسيات :دراسة حالة من شمال المغربخلاصة : إن فهم السياق التاريخي لمنطقة معينة، يمكّن المحافظ البيئي الوافد من التفكير في دوره في المجتمعات، ولانسجامٍ سياسيٍ واجتماعي أفضل داخلها. هنا نكتشف كيف أثرت الوكالات والمؤسسات الخارجية ، بما في ذلك القوة الاستعمارية السابقة، على المجتمعات المحلية التي تتعايش مع قرود المكاك البربري (Macaca sylvanus) في غابة بوهاشم شمال المغرب. في سياق بدء أنشطة الحفاظ على المكاك البربري، أجرينا مقابلات مع ممثلين من المنظمات الحكومية وغير الحكومية المحلية وسكان المدن والقرويين حول السياق التاريخي والسياسي والاجتماعي لموقع الدراسة. وجدنا أن القرى المحيطة بغابة بوهاشم كانت مهمشة و معرضة للتمييز ضدها سياسياً واجتماعياً من قبل الدولة والمجتمع الحضري. و أثر بشكل سلبي وجود هذه الانقسامات والنظرة السطحية للوكالات الخارجية للقرى على أنها مجتمعات متجانسة، على تدخلات الحفظ البيئي، لأن الناس رفضوا أي مبادرة مفروضة عليهم دون استشارة مسبقة. و وجدنا أن القرويين في بوهاشم كانوا ولا يزالون مستبعدين من المشاركة الهادفة في الحفاظ على الغابة، وهذا الاكتشاف شجعنا على التخلص من التداعيات الاستعمارية في ممارستنا. لقد تواصلنا بشكل هادف بأعضاء من المجتمعات المحيطة، واستجبنا لأخبار القصص الخاطئة حول أنشطتنا من خلال تطوير مشروع يعمل في ثلاث قرى شمل جميع الأسر. بناءً على تجاربنا، نوصي جميع دعاة الحفاظ على البيئة بإجراء بحث تاريخي ونوعي لاكتساب فهم أعمق وأكثر دقة للمجتمعات التي يعملون فيها. يجب أن يشجع هذا الفهم دعاة الحفاظ على البيئة على التعرف على التحيزات الاجتماعية والثقافية الخاصة بهم، والتخلص من التداعيات الاستعمارية في ممارساتهم.قد يساعدنا الاهتمام بموقفنا الخاص على تجنب الإبعاد و التقليل من شأن الأشخاص، الذين ينظرون إلى إجراءات الحفاظ على البيئة من منظور مختلف تمامًا لكن عادل .
Geophagy in Gibraltar Barbary macaques is a primate tradition anthropogenically induced
We report, for the first time, geophagy – the deliberate consumption of earth – in the Barbary macaque ( Macaca sylvanus ) population living at the human-primate interface in Gibraltar. We evaluate potential adaptive functions of this behavior in an anthropogenic context, drawing on predictions from the protection and supplementation hypotheses. Geophagy occurred at exceptionally high rates compared to other macaque species and locations, and it was more common in summer when tourist numbers peak. It was also more likely when macaques consumed greater amounts of tourist-derived food, supporting a protective function. Local ecological factors contributed as well, with the distribution of red soil (terra rossa) influencing geophagy frequency. Although the behavior was not linked to female reproductive status, supplementation cannot be fully dismissed given the very limited insectivory in this population. We propose that tourist-derived foods may disrupt gut microbiome composition, producing discomfort that individuals mitigate through soil ingestion. Geophagy is likely socially learned, as groups showed consistent preferences for specific soil types, and its practice in presence of conspecifics offered opportunities for social learning. Reports from other sites indicate that geophagy is not unique to Gibraltar, but in this population it appears to be anthropogenically induced and socially transmitted, forming a locally maintained tradition.
Chemical signatures of social information in Barbary macaques
Primates are well-known for their complex social lives and intricate social relationships, which requires them to obtain and update social knowledge about conspecifics. The sense of smell may provide access to social information that is unavailable in other sensory domains or enhance the precision and reliability of other sensory cues. However, the cognition of social information in catarrhine primates has been studied primarily in the visual and auditory domain. We assessed the social information content of body odor in a catarrhine primate, the Barbary macaque ( Macaca sylvanus ), in three semi-free ranging groups at Affenberg Salem, Germany. In particular, we related socially relevant attributes (identity, genetic relatedness, rank, sex, age, group membership) to chemical profiles of body odor. We applied non-invasive active sampling via thermal desorption tubes and analyzed samples by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. We found robust evidence for individual odor signatures and limited support for kin signatures. Chemical profiles were also related to group membership, but little to rank, sex or age. The detected associations between chemical profiles and socially relevant attributes form the theoretical foundations for olfactory information transfer, highlighting the potential of body odor to provide valuable social information in this highly visually oriented primate.
Innovation in wild Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus)
Innovation is the ability to solve novel problems or find novel solutions to familiar problems, and it is known to affect fitness in both human and non-human animals. In primates, innovation has been mostly studied in captivity, although differences in living conditions may affect individuals’ ability to innovate. Here, we tested innovation in a wild group of Barbary macaques ( Macaca sylvanus ). In four different conditions, we presented the group with several identical foraging boxes containing food. To understand which individual characteristics and behavioural strategies best predicted innovation rate, we measured the identity of the individuals manipulating the boxes and retrieving the food, and their behaviour during the task. Our results showed that success in the novel task was mainly affected by the experimental contingencies and the behavioural strategies used during the task. Individuals were more successful in the 1-step conditions, if they participated in more trials, showed little latency to approach the boxes and mainly manipulated functional parts of the box. In contrast, we found no effect of inhibition, social facilitation and individual characteristics like sex, age, rank, centrality, neophobia and reaction to humans, on the individuals’ ability to innovate.
Nonsensus in the treatment of proximal humerus fractures: uncontrolled, blinded, comparative behavioural analysis between Homo chirurgicus accidentus and Macaca sylvanus
AbstractObjectiveTo investigate the inter-rater reliability of Barbary macaques compared with an expert group of surgeons for the choice of treatment and predicted outcome of proximal humerus fractures.DesignUncontrolled, blinded, comparative behavioural analysis.SettingGermany and United States.Participants10 blinded experts in the field of orthopaedic trauma surgery (Homo chirurgicus accidentus), with special focus on upper extremity surgery from Germany and the US, and five Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) from a semi-free range enclosure.Main outcome measuresThe reliability of agreement between raters assessed with Fleiss’ ĸ.ResultsBarbary macaques seem to have inferior inter-rater reliability in comparison with experts for choice of treatment (non-surgical v surgical), but for the geriatric age group most frequently affected by proximal humeral fractures, they performed similarly to the experts in their choices of treatment and choice of surgical procedure. Agreement about predicted outcome was poor among the macaques and slight among the experts. All experts almost always predicted the outcome incorrectly and tended to underestimate it. While only 4 (4.4%) of 90 experts’ predictions were correct, 13 (28.9%) of 45 macaques’ predictions were correct.ConclusionsConsensus on treatment and expected outcomes of proximal humeral fractures is lacking even beyond the human species. Although Barbary macaques tend to predict the clinical outcome more accurately, their reliability to assist surgeons in making a consistent decision is limited. Future high quality research is needed to guide surgeons’ decision making on the optimal treatment of this common injury.
Spatial Reaction Norms of Barbary Macaques (Macaca sylvanus) in Response to Seasonal Resource Variation in Two Contrasting Landscapes
Human-induced land use changes create both challenges and opportunities for wildlife. Cultivated areas represent a food source but bear a risk of human-wildlife conflict. In the Middle Atlas of Morocco, the Endangered Barbary macaques ( Macaca sylvanus ) has experienced increasing grazing in its forest habitat and conversion of pastures adjacent to forest to croplands, in which macaques now forage. Orchard owners hire wardens to deter macaques from entering croplands. To inform human-wildlife coexistence strategies, we examined how resource availability and perceived risk, measured by the daily presence of wardens and canopy openness (Barbary macaques are reluctant to cross open areas), influenced macaques’ use of crops and natural foods. Over 9 months, we monitored space use and diets in two groups, one with access to orchards and one without. We used “spatial reaction norms” to describe how each group adjusted its habitat preferences across seasons, in response to temporal variation in resource availability in the group’s home range. Our results showed that macaques selected resources based on the relative costs and benefits in the landscape. Macaques consumed naturally occurring resources throughout the study, but when anthropogenic resources were available, macaques preferentially selected them over natural foods. However, increased risk due to human deterrence associated with a resource consistently reduced its use for as long as the risk persisted. From a management perspective, these insights suggest that reducing the use of the natural resources by humans can help attract macaques to the forest but only if combined with wardens to guard the crops.
