LATEST HOT TICKET: A FLOATING SEAT FOR THE 4TH
''I just explain to those who call that invitations went out a long time ago,'' Mr. [Malcolm Forbes] said. ''You build up a group over time and suddenly you find the boat's nearly full.'' Nearly? ''Don't you dare say I said nearly!'' he yelled. ''If you say that, I'll be swamped. Say we're trying to keep a little elbow room.'' ''In 1983, for the Brooklyn Bridge centennial, a lady offered me a Mercedes-Benz if I'd give her a seat on the boat,'' he recalled fondly. ''When I said no, she waited at the edge of the gangplank, murmuring, 'God forbid somebody on board should have a heart attack.' '' For the uninvited, a good technique is open scorn. CHURCH COUNSELING DEFENDED IN SUICIDE CASE
''I'm not sure I've read that page,'' said the church leader, the Rev. John MacArthur Jr., head of the Grace Community Church, a nondemoninational evangelical church in Sun Valley with a weekly attendance of 20,000 and a budget of about $8 million annually. A central allegation for both the clergy malpractice contention and the one of emotional distress is that church officials held themselves out as experts in the field of care for mental illness. The church's counselors who were called to testify have conceded that they have no formal training in psychology or psychiatry, but they also say that they have years of experience in counseling and that they have a supernatural ''gift'' for counseling.
