According to [Pandeli Majko], everything is connected with what really happened in Gerdec [site of an arms disposal factory destroyed by a recent explosion]. \"The event in Gerdec is the gravest event to happen in Albania after the events in 1997. It has definitely taken its toll on Albania's relations with the international community. This incident definitely has had its effect on the international community. We should see things as they are,\" declared Majko.

Referring to the figures published by the media, [Pandeli Majko] said that one fourth of the assembly deputies were collaborators of the former Sigurimi. \"We should take action on this unprecedented act in the relations of the Assembly of Albania with the public. At a time when we are talking about integration and prosperity the media have provided evidence about the fact that one in four deputies of the current Assembly of Albania has been a collaborator of the former State Sigurimi. I think that you, Mrs. Chairwoman, should provide a serious response to this fact. The debate on the three bills deposited on this issue should be urgently included on the agenda. I think that it is time to put an end to the strange postponement of this debate,\" said Majko in his speech to the [assembly] session yesterday evening.

\"The Italian Senate has called an emergency session to discuss the issue of the Turkish airline flight heading for Italy, while the Italian parliament is expected to begin or open a debate about the beginning of the traffic of dinghies from Albania to Italy,\" [Pandeli Majko] said at a news conference today. \"There are a series of issues pending to be urgently handled by the Assembly of Albania.

The presidium meeting raised the need for better coordination among the opposition's assembly groups. PS Chairman Edi Rama and PS Secretary-General Pandeli Majko were given the authority to negotiate with other opposition leaders. The Socialist secretary- general, who is also chairman of the party's Assembly group, confirmed the decision to organize protests. \"This option is certainly not ruled out,\" Majko stressed.

In a media pronouncement at the end of the Assembly investigation on the general prosecutor, [Pandeli Majko] said that \"the opposition will demand a secret ballot in regard to the case of the general prosecutor\".

Mr [Pandeli Majko] voiced his readiness \"to go to the negotiating table to discuss over the essential moments, the interim register and the media law\". \"Our stand on the issue is not either personal or extremist but it is the stand of all the Opposition because without the realization of these conditions it will be difficult staging normal elections in Albania\", said Majko.

He explained to the reporters the initiative of the deputy of the Assembly Liberal group, Neritan Ceka, on the change of the regulations. According to [Pandeli Majko], this initiative is signed by about 50 deputies, including the deputies of the majority.

\"This factory has kept the town alive and vice-versa,\" Minister [Pandeli Majko] said in his speech. He then informed the citizens and the workers of the government decision to resume work in the plant and give compensation to the workers. The plant was producing weapons and, particularly, ammunition until 1990. After 1999 the plant was abandoned and 2,000 workers lost their jobs. The plant, which was once the pride of the country with its supplies for the foreign market and the Albanian armouries, fell into an economic crisis. \"This plant built by your fathers has been reduced to ruins. It is something that no-one in the former [Communist] government thought would happen,\" Majko said.

[Li Meng] said Sino-Albanian friendly relations had stood the test of time over the past half century. China has always attached importance in developing its relations with Albania and is willing to further promote bilateral friendly, cooperative relations by enhancing exchanges and mutual understanding, he noted.

The positions of these two members of the Albanian government seem to be opposite. In [Pandeli Majko]'s opinion, the number of the Albanian soldiers engaged in Iraq will presently remain the same, whereas [Islami] has promised the United States more troops under the red-and- black [Albanian] flag on its side.
