Machiavelli in Mesopotamia
Argues that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's legacy is likely a return to the strong man model of characteristic of traditional Iraqi politics. To illustrate, Maliki's political strategies in the province of Diyala, Baghdad, & southern Iraq is detailed. It is concluded that Iraq is far removed from the democracy envisioned by the US, with the Shiite majority firmly in control, an uneasy Shiite elite-Sunni minority coexistence, & the reemergence of central government-Kurdish tensions. It is contended that democracy will be window dressing to a Shiite-led centralized authoritarian state, where security trumps absolute freedom & the citizens accept that. D. Edelman. The Sairoon (On the Move) Alliance, formed by Shi'i cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and the Iraqi Communist Party, were the clear victors of Iraq's May 12 election, taking 54 out of 329 parliamentary seats, according to preliminary results.
