Seasonal study of the relationship between the condition factor and the monogeneans parasite density of Heterobranchus isopterus Bleeker, 1863 and Clarias gariepinus
A comparative study on the relationship between condition factors and parasite density of Heterobranchus isopterus and Clarias gariepinus was conducted during the wet and dry seasons. Specimens were collected from the Bagoué River from August 2020 to July 2021. Two hundred eighty-four specimens of H. isopterus and 272 specimens of C. gariepinus were collected from all stations during both seasons. The standard length and weight of the fish were recorded and the condition factor was calculated for each individual. The gills were examined under a binocular loupe and the monogeneans were collected. Parasite counts showed that for both host species, the total number of parasites was higher in the dry season than in the wet season (p < 0.05). The correlation coefficient was determined to investigate the relationship between the condition factor and the total number of parasites. A significant positive correlation was observed between the condition factor and the number of parasites in both host species during the wet season. A negative correlation was observed in both hosts during the dry season. The information from this study could be taken into consideration in the sanitary management of the fish farming industry. The dry season could be considered as the season with favorable conditions for the development of most parasite species.
Evaluation of post-surgical healing in catfish submetidos celiotomia com utiliza o de robenacoxibe e meloxicam
Aquaculture and fish farming for commercial and consumption purposes have been established activities for decades. However, recent years have witnessed a growing trend in the popularity of fish as pets, leading to an increased demand for veterinarians specializing in the clinical, surgical, and anesthetic care of these species. This study emphasizes the necessity of a postoperative protocol that incorporates nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for Rhamdia quelen. NSAIDs can influence the healing process, yet studies focusing on surgical and pharmacological management specific to this species remain limited. The study comprised 30 animals, equally distributed into three groups: control, meloxicam, and robenacoxib. The surgical wound resulting from a standardized 2 cm ventral midline celiotomy was evaluated macroscopically and histologically. Euthanasia was conducted at either seven or 14 days postoperatively, totaling six subgroups. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in healing between groups, and no organ injuries were observed, demonstrating that both NSAIDs were safe at the administered postoperative doses. However, a significant difference was noted in deep dermal hemorrhage, which was absent in the robenacoxib group but present in the control and meloxicam groups. Key words: fish, surgery, healing, anti-inflammatory.
Spatiotemporal Trends and Zoning Geospatial Assessment in China’s Offshore Mariculture (2018–2022)
Offshore mariculture is a critical component of China’s aquaculture sector, but its rapid expansion presents significant challenges to sustainable marine resource management. This study utilizes high-resolution remote sensing data (2017–2023) and advanced ConvNeXt V2 algorithms to quantitatively analyze the spatiotemporal dynamics of offshore mariculture and explore its spatial distribution in relation to marine functional zoning policies. Through a detailed classification of six mariculture types, this study reveals significant spatial shifts, with China’s offshore mariculture transitioning from a model characterized by a “coastal, concentrated layout” to a new paradigm of “deep-sea and far-sea expansion, multi-point distribution”. Notably, the area of deep-sea and far-sea mariculture increased by 41.8% in regions with water depths of 50 m or more from 2018 to 2022. However, in 2022, the actual mariculture area accounted for only 0.608% of the designated functional zones, while 61.79% of mariculture activities occurred outside these planned zones, indicating a considerable spatial mismatch between mariculture practices and zoning plans. This study underscores the urgent need to optimize spatial planning and regulatory frameworks to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability, offering novel insights and actionable recommendations for the coordinated development of China’s marine economy.
Structural Analysis of Embryonic Development of Embryos From the Crossing of Two Species of Siluriform
Based on the need for knowledge about the biology of hybrid fish specimens currently being produced by commercial fish farmers, this study aimed to study the initial ontogenesis up to the fifth day after larval hatching of the Hybrid LP produced by crossing Leiarius marmoratus (♀) and Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum (♂), thus producing important data for fish farming, as well as for ichthyoplankton studies. The embryogenesis of the Hybrid LP was typical of teleosts but with differences and similarities in relation to other species and their parents, such as duration of development and moment of mesoderm segmentation, among others. Five stages of embryonic development were defined, from the moment of fertilization until larval hatching: zygote, cleavage, gastrulation, organogenesis, and hatching. The embryogenesis period was 13h, at an average temperature of 27.98°C. The embryonic development stages established for the hybrid were like those of its parental species L. marmoratus and P. reticulatum. Thus, through this research, it was possible to conclude that the embryonic development of the Hybrid LP originating from interspecific crosses between females of L. marmoratus with males of P. reticulatum occurred in a development period similar to that found in studies of its parental species as well as for the inverse hybrid (PL), originating from females of P. reticulatum with males of L. marmoratus, under similar temperatures, not being possible to morphologically differentiate the embryos and larvae until the fifth day after hatching, neither of the parental species nor the Hybrid PL.
