The Sphairistike set
* This weekend in 1874, Major Walter Clopton Wingfield patented the game of Sphairistik. Inspired by the athleticism of the ancient Athenians, he gave his invention a Greek name, although his Greek was a bit off; it's more of an adjective than a noun, and translates as something akin to 'ball-ism'. The Sporting Gazette lampooned the name: \"Let us try our hands at Sph- Sph- Sphair... No! I will not undergo the torture of pronouncing it! I content myself with the last syllables: stik.\" Yes, much to Wingfield's chagrin, people started calling it 'Sticky'.
FRANK MARSDEN ; Popular Liverpool MP
[Frank Marsden] reflected that in no way did this hinder the development of good twinning relations, not least because the burgomaster confessed that as a young lad he had been involved in the \" Baedeker bombing\" of Exeter. As one who had known war and its real dangers Marsden showed a real interest in the Services. On demobilisation he worked for Fitzpatricks, the wholesale Liverpool flower merchants, then as a crane driver in the docks and finally as a telephonist for the GPO (a job to which he returned after Parliament). He became a local councillor for the Liverpool St Domingo ward in 1964. Losing his seat in the 1967 local elections that were disastrous for Labour, he was re-elected for Liverpool Vauxhall, where he served as a councillor from 1969 until he was chosen as parliamentary candidate. One of his most fulfilling roles was as chairman of the Liverpool Markets between 1965 and 1967.
Obituary of Frank Marsden Labour MP of the old guard whose tiny but tough Liverpool seat was abolished under boundary changes
FRANK MARSDEN, who has died aged 83, was Labour MP for Liverpool Scotland from 1971 until February 1974, when the seat - one of the smallest in the country - was swept away by boundary changes. Marsden was a hard-working and popular city councillor, and when, early in 1971, Walter Alldritt, the Labour MP for the city's Scotland division, resigned to take up a trades union post, Marsden (who was Alldritt's agent) was offered the seat. Although the Labour vote was split (thanks to an independent anti-abortion candidate who had been rejected by Labour to contest the seat), Marsden held it with a greatly reduced majority of 6,795 votes over the Conservatives,

\"Breaking Bad: The Complete First Season\" Here is the other new drama (besides \"Mad Men\") thats turning cable channel AMC into the new HBO. The seven-episode first season of \"Breaking Bad\" is a darkly funny trip through hell with Walter White (Emmy-winner Bryan Cranston), a high school chemistry teacher who learns shortly after his 50th birthday that he has terminal lung cancer. Desperate to make sure his family his teenage son has cerebral palsy and his wife is pregnant with their second child will be OK after his death, Walter tries to make some cash by creating and selling high-grade crystal meth. Needless to say, his plan goes horribly wrong. The first season of \"Breaking Bad,\" while not for everyone, is great television drama challenging, well-written and beautifully acted. The solid collection of extras on this three-disc set include commentaries on two episodes, making-of featurettes and more. This is a show worth discovering. Indeed, Pasco has a little more in the tank at the end and finishes in 2:18.1. A third entry, dubbed \"the Oddballs,\" cobbled together from two Citrus linemen and two extras from Pasco and one from [Hudson], finishes third in 2:27. Hudson totals 66, well ahead of Pasco (44) and the Oddballs (33), but it isn't enough to catch the Pirates in the overall standings.
