"Martin, Peter."
Sort by:
Home and away
'Home and Away' draws on the author's long career as an engineer responsible for many projects around the world. In the memoir he highlights some of those projects with descriptions of the design processes and the construction methods used to bring the works to successful completion, keeping technical detail to the minimum needed for the reader's understanding of the projects. Personal reminiscences of his travels complement descriptions of life as an engineer. Developments in analysis of structures during the author's working life have enabled all manner of structures to be designed to display elegance of form in a natural way without unnecessary embellishment. Practising engineers understand the satisfaction to be found in designing such engineering works and seeing them built as they envisaged.
Peter Michael Martin's Corporeal Visions: Love, Death, and Democracy in Moby-Dick
Moby-Dick has been the near-exclusive focus of artist Peter Michael Martin's prolific output—in woodblock print, papercut, sculpture, and photograph—over the past decade. By examining Martin's depictions of bodies—in isolation, in pairs, in collectives—this essay provides a primer on Martin's recent works. The essay begins by considering Martin's portraits of Ishmael, Queequeg, and Ahab in two series of black-and-white photographs, Altered Visions and Call me Ahab. Altered Visions illustrates the union of Queequeg and Ishmael as their embrace transcends physical and social divisions. Call Me Ahab , conversely, emphasizes Ahab's solitude, as he communes only with the \"naught beyond\" (Melville 159). Juxtaposing scenes of intimacy with emblems of death, these works consider the body as a site of both connection and isolation, friendship and subjugation. The second half of this essay discusses two of Martin's larger-scale works (the mixed-media assemblage Trumped Up Optimism and the woodblock print Above the Rest ), designed for display in public spaces. These works depict bodies en masse as deindividuated crowds under the control of a sole leader, recasting the social visions of Ishmael and Ahab as a conflict between democracy and totalitarianism. Ultimately, I argue, in the nude form, Martin finds an allegory for artistic vulnerability, which enables the radical self-expression Melville champions through Ishmael. Thus, in his depictions of bodies, Martin probes tensions between individual and collective agency and advances \"Melvillean vulnerability\" as a strategy for social transformation.

The Power of Music
2013
This article aims to contribute to the increasingly rich body of ethnographic and sociological studies that focus on processes of musical practice. After a brief introduction to the significance of music in social life, it outlines the advantages of adopting an actor-oriented analysis that gives close attention to issues of agency and emergent socio-cultural forms. This is followed by a brief encounter with the dynamics of musical performance as perceived by members of the Guarneri Quartet, after which two contrasting musical scenarios are analyzed in depth. The first focuses on music and ritual practices in the Peruvian Andes, and the second on the English musical renaissance of the early twentieth century. The article closes with a brief comment on the need to examine in depth the social components of musical composition and performance.

Wine: When it's warm, try these affordable white wines
2015
Sauvignon blanc is an excellent choice before it gets too warm. It's a vibrant, crisp, fresh wine full of such fruity or herbaceous flavors and aromas as hints of melon, citrus, grass, bell pepper or grapefruit. It pairs well with lighter fish and chicken dishes as well as entree salads. It's also an excellent choice with cheese plates or fresh oysters. Don't let the screw cap or low price deter you. This wine is a great value, and is always a hit with guests. It may be inexpensive, but it's a decent wine. I expect I'll be serving more of this crisp, fruit-forward wine in the coming weeks. There's an abundance of chardonnay in almost any wine or grocery store, so sampling different styles is easy. A good place to start is with Hook & Ladder Russian River Valley ($15). It's fermented in French oak, but it's nicely balanced and offers a crisp finish with hints of green apple. It's one of my favorites.

Wine: Tasting 5 syrahs for summer
2015
When thinking of syrah, it's common to think of Australia, which is second only to France in growing this grape. The United States produces syrah as well, mostly in California, and, to a lesser extent, Washington. In the United States, the wine may be labeled as either syrah (its French name) or shiraz (which is the norm in Australia). Winking Owl shiraz ($3) was the cheapest wine we tasted. Available exclusively at Aldi stores, this is simply labeled as \"California shiraz\" and suggests flavors of black cherry, blackberry and spice. I've enjoyed and recommended some Winking Owl wines, but this probably would be a pass. Revelry 2010 Block 19 syrah ($54) was the only syrah we tasted that wasn't from California. It is made with grapes from the renowned Weinbau Vineyard near Pasco, Washington. The wine is unfiltered and produced with minimal intervention, according to the winemaker's notes.
