High-power mid-infrared femtosecond master oscillator power amplifier Er:ZBLAN fiber laser system
2023
High-power femtosecond mid-infrared (MIR) lasers are of vast importance to both fundamental research and applications. We report a high-power femtosecond master oscillator power amplifier laser system consisting of a single-mode Er:ZBLAN fiber mode-locked oscillator and pre-amplifier followed by a large-mode-area Er:ZBLAN fiber main amplifier. The main amplifier is actively cooled and bidirectionally pumped at 976 nm, generating a slope efficiency of 26.9%. Pulses of 8.12 W, 148 fs at 2.8 μm with a repetition rate of 69.65 MHz are achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest average power ever achieved from a femtosecond MIR laser source. Such a compact ultrafast laser system is promising for a wide range of applications, such as medical surgery and material processing.

Narrow-Linewidth 2 μm All-Fiber Laser Amplifier with a Highly Stable and Precisely Tunable Wavelength for Gas Molecule Absorption in Photonic Crystal Hollow-Core Fibers
2021
In recent years, mid-infrared fiber lasers based on gas-filled photonic crystal hollow-core fibers (HCFs) have attracted enormous attention. They provide a potential method for the generation of high-power mid-infrared emissions, particularly beyond 4 μm. However, there are high requirements of the pump for wavelength stability, tunability, laser linewidth, etc., due to the narrow absorption linewidth of gases. Here, we present the use of a narrow-linewidth, high-power fiber laser with a highly stable and precisely tunable wavelength at 2 μm for gas absorption. It was a master oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) structure, consisting of a narrow-linewidth fiber seed and two stages of Thulium-doped fiber amplifiers (TDFAs). The seed wavelength was very stable and was precisely tuned from 1971.4 to 1971.8 nm by temperature. Both stages of the amplifiers were forward-pumping, and a maximum output power of 24.8 W was obtained, with a slope efficiency of about 50.5%. The measured laser linewidth was much narrower than the gas absorption linewidth and the wavelength stability was validated by HBr gas absorption in HCFs. If the seed is replaced, this MOPA laser can provide a versatile pump source for mid-infrared fiber gas lasers.

Passive spherical aberration compensation in laser diode side-pumped master oscillator power amplifier laser systems
2025
Based on a 4f system, a 0° reflector and a single laser diode side-pump amplifier, a new amplifier is designed to compensate the spherical aberration of the amplified laser generated by a single laser diode side-pump amplifier and enhance the power of the amplified laser. Furthermore, the role of the 4f system in the passive spherical aberration compensation and its effect on the amplified laser are discussed in detail. The results indicate that the amplification efficiency is enhanced by incorporating a 4f system in a double-pass amplifier and placing a 0° reflector only at the focal point of the single-pass amplified laser. This method also effectively uses the heat from the gain medium (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) of the amplifier to compensate the spherical aberration of the amplified laser.

Millijoule-level nanosecond pulse generation beyond 3 μm enabled by an Er3+/Dy3+ co-doped fluoride fiber master oscillator power amplifier
2026
High-energy nanosecond pulses at wavelengths beyond 2.5 μm in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) region are of significant interest for applications such as polymer processing, minimally invasive surgery, laser ranging and infrared countermeasures. While rare-earth-doped fluoride fibers provide a compact and robust platform for mid-IR pulse generation, achieving millijoule (mJ)-level nanosecond pulses beyond 3 μm remains challenging. In this work, we demonstrate high-energy nanosecond pulse generation at 3.17 μm using a master oscillator power amplifier based on a 980 nm diode-pumped Er3+/Dy3+ co-doped fluoride fiber. Seeded by an actively Q-switched oscillator operating at a 1 kHz repetition rate, the system delivers 0.68 mJ of pulse energy with a pulse width of 132 ns and a peak power of 4.8 kW, while maintaining single-transverse-mode operation (M2 = 1.2–1.3). To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first report on mJ-level nanosecond pulse generation beyond 3 μm from a fiber-based system.

All-Fiber Wavelength-Tunable Narrow-Linewidth Polarization-Maintaining Tm-Doped Fiber MOPA System
2022
An all-fiber wavelength-tunable narrow-linewidth polarization-maintaining (PM) Tm-doped fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system is presented. We demonstrate an all-fiber ring cavity Tm-doped fiber master-oscillator (MO) with a tuning range of 110 nm (from 1925 to 2034 nm). The maximum output power of 459 mW is obtained at 1992.9 nm for 16 W of launched pump power at 793 nm, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 5.6% concerning launched pump power. By using a one-stage Tm-doped fiber amplifier combined with a high gain of >10 dB, the maximum slope efficiency is 12.6% and the output power is 5.65 W at 1993 nm. The 3 dB linewidth is less than 0.5 nm, M2 ≈ 1.25, and the polarization extinction ratio (PER) reaches 21.4 dB. The influence of different active fiber lengths on laser amplification is also studied.

Injection-Seeded 500 Hz Repetition Rate High Peak Power Single-Frequency Nd:YAG Laser for Mid-Infrared Generation
2018
We develop an injection-seeded single-frequency neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser with 500 Hz repetition rate and high peak power. The laser construction is designed as seed injection and master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) including single-frequency master oscillator, extra-cavity frequency doubling crystal, and round-trip power amplifier. The master oscillator can emit 1,064 nm laser of 8.4 mJ with 6.8 ns pulse width at the pump energy equal to 23 mJ. A green laser energy of 1.1 mJ is obtained by setting the proper temperature of the LBO crystal. The pulse energy of 1,064 nm laser decreases to 6.5 mJ after passing through the LBO crystal and rises to 25.3 mJ after a round-trip power amplifier corresponding to the extraction efficiency of 29%. The final output pulse width is 6.5 ns, representing a peak power of 3.9 MW. The 1,064 nm laser beam quality factor M2 of the master oscillator and the amplified one are 1.3 and 1.5, respectively. The laser will be used to generate mid-infrared where the 532 nm laser with narrow pulse width is to pump sheet optical parametric oscillator (OPO) and the 1,064 nm laser with high peak power to pump the OPO.

A Review of High-Power Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers in the 1550 nm Band
2023
The 1550 nm band semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) has great potential for applications such as optical communication. Its wide-gain bandwidth is helpful in expanding the bandwidth resources of optical communication, thereby increasing total capacity transmitted over the fiber. Its relatively low cost and ease of integration also make it a high-performance amplifier of choice for LiDAR applications. In recent years, with the rapid development of quantum-well (QW) material systems, SOAs have gradually overcome the shortcomings of polarization sensitivity and high noise. The research on quantum-dot (QD) materials has further improved the noise characteristics and transmission loss of SOAs. The design of special waveguide structures—such as plate-coupled optical waveguide amplifiers and tapered amplifiers—has also increased the saturation output power of SOAs. The maximum gain of the SOA has been reported to be more than 21 dB. The maximum saturation output power has been reported to be more than 34.7 dBm. The maximum 3 dB gain bandwidth has been reported to be more than 120 nm, the lowest noise figure has been reported to be less than 4 dB, and the lowest polarization-dependent gain has been reported to be 0.1 dB. This study focuses on the improvement and enhancement of the main performance parameters of high-power SOAs in the 1550 nm band and introduces the performance parameters, the research progress of high-power SOAs in the 1550 nm band, and the development and application status of SOAs. Finally, the development trends and prospects of high-power SOAs in the 1550 nm band are summarized.

Time-resolved analysis of ASE impact in a copper bromide MOPA system
2025
This study investigates the influence of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) on the output characteristics of a Master Oscillator Power Amplifier (MOPA) system, with particular attention to the temporal dependence of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The time delay between the ASE generated in the power amplifier and the laser pulse emitted by the master oscillator was varied over a wide range, from − 36 to + 24 ns. A positive delay corresponds to the input signal entering the amplifier before the onset of ASE. Temporal profiles of the ASE, the input pulse, and the amplified output signal were recorded and analyzed. The results demonstrate that the temporal alignment of the input signal with the leading edge of the ASE critically affects the output power and the efficiency of population inversion utilization. The maximum output power of 3.87 watts was achieved at a time delay of plus 4.7 ns, when the peak of the input pulse coincided with the ASE front. Quantitative estimates of the ASE contribution to the output signal were obtained, enabling an assessment of the SNR under various timing conditions. These findings provide practical recommendations for optimizing synchronization in MOPA-based laser systems to maximize output contrast and minimize noise.

Multi-mode stable, megawatt peak power Nd: YAG laser
2025
High-average-power, megawatt-peak-power solid-state lasers with high beam quality have garnered significant attention in the field of laser cleaning applications. This paper presents a 1064 nm diode-pumped Nd: YAG master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system employing a multi-mode stable resonator. The designed resonator exhibits minimal beam quality variation when operating in the second stability zone, combining excellent power scalability with remarkable multi-mode stability. A flexible beam delivery system incorporating a 400-µm-core-diameter optical fiber demonstrates exceptional performance, achieving coupling efficiency exceeding 95% at a maximum average output power of 701 W with 20 kHz repetition frequency. Furthermore, it reaches a peak power of 1.0 MW at 12 kHz repetition frequency while maintaining 588 W average power output. Experimental results confirm that this innovative design successfully balances high-power operation with beam quality preservation and efficient energy transmission.
