Die Architekturbücher des Walter Hermann Ryff
Die Zehn Bücher über Architektur des antiken Autors Vitruv stellen für die Baukunst der Frühen Neuzeit einen Schlüsseltext dar, anhand dessen man die Bauformen und Techniken der Antike wiederzugewinnen suchte. Dieses Textes nahm sich Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts einer der bekanntesten und berüchtigsten Kompilatoren und Plagiatoren des deutschen Sprachraumes an – Walter Hermann Ryff. Der auch als Rivius bekannte Bearbeiter übersetzte nicht nur den Text Vitruvs, sondern ergänzte ihn auch um einen umfangreichen Kommentar. Darüber hinaus kombinierte er den so entstandenen Vitruvius Teutsch mit einem zweiten voluminösen Band zu mathematischen und technischen Disziplinen, welchen er ebenfalls aus Texten anderer Autoren zusammenstellte. Julian Jachmann wendet sich in seiner Untersuchung vor allem der Frage zu, auf welche Weise Ryff seine Quellen auswählte und mit ihnen umging. Anhand der inhaltlichen Schwerpunkte und Strategien des Publikationsprogramms lässt sich nachvollziehen, wie eng die Rezeption architektonischer Themen mit den mathematischen Wissenschaften verbunden war. Letztere galten den Fachleuten als Metadisziplinen und genossen bei Laien großes Interesse. Die Werke von Ryff können daher belegen, dass die Verbindung der Architekturtheorie mit den populären mathematischen Themen die Rezeption des vitruvianischen Gedankengutes im 16. Jahrhundert förderte.
How data happened : a history from the age of reason to the age of algorithms

International Heritage and Historic Building Conservation
The majority of books in English on historic building conservation and heritage preservation training are often restricted to Western architecture and its origins. Consequently, the history of building conservation, the study of contemporary paradigms and case studies in most universities and within wider interest circles, predominantly in the UK, Europe, and USA focus mainly on Europe and sometimes the USA, although the latter is often excluded from European publications. With an increasingly multicultural student body in Euro-American universities and with a rising global interest in heritage preservation, there is an urgent need for publications to cover a larger geographical and social area including not only Asia, Australia, Africa and South America but also previously neglected countries in Europe like the new members of the European Community and the northern neighbour of the USA, Canada. The inclusion of the 'other' in built environment education in general and in building conservation in particular is a pre-requisite of cultural interaction and widening participation. International Heritage and Historic Building Conservation assesses successful contemporary conservation paradigms from around the world. The book evaluates conservation case studies from previously excluded areas of the world to create an integrated account of Historic Building Conservation that crosses the boundaries of language and culture and sets an example for further inclusive research. The Evolution of Mathematics
There is a growing awareness among researchers in the humanities and social sciences of the rhetorical force of mathematical discourse-whether in regard to gerrymandering, facial recognition technologies, or racial biases in algorithmic automation. This book proposes a novel way to engage with and understand mathematics via a theoretical framework that highlights how math transforms the social-material world. In this study, G. Mitchell Reyes applies contemporary rhetorical analysis to mathematical discourse, calling into question the commonly held view that math equals truth. Examining mathematics in historical context, Reyes traces its development from Plato's teaching about abstract numbers to Euclidian geometry and the emergence of calculus and infinitesimals, imaginary numbers, and algorithms. This history reveals that mathematical innovation has always relied on rhetorical practices of making meaning, such as analogy, metaphor, and invention. Far from expressing truth hidden deep in reality, mathematics is dynamic and evolving, shaping reality and our experience of it. By bringing mathematics back down to the material-social world, Reyes makes it possible for scholars of the rhetoric and sociology of science, technology, and math to collaborate with mathematicians themselves in order to better understand our material world and public culture.
Arguing with Numbers
As discrete fields of inquiry, rhetoric and mathematics have long been considered antithetical to each other. That is, if mathematics explains or describes the phenomena it studies with certainty, persuasion is not needed. This volume calls into question the view that mathematics is free of rhetoric. Through nine studies of the intersections between these two disciplines, Arguing with Numbers shows that mathematics is in fact deeply rhetorical. Using rhetoric as a lens to analyze mathematically based arguments in public policy, political and economic theory, and even literature, the essays in this volume reveal how mathematics influences the values and beliefs with which we assess the world and make decisions and how our worldviews influence the kinds of mathematical instruments we construct and accept. In addition, contributors examine how concepts of rhetoric—such as analogy and visuality—have been employed in mathematical and scientific reasoning, including in the theorems of mathematical physicists and the geometrical diagramming of natural scientists. Challenging academic orthodoxy, these scholars reject a math-equals-truth reduction in favor of a more constructivist theory of mathematics as dynamic, evolving, and powerfully persuasive. By bringing these disparate lines of inquiry into conversation with one another, Arguing with Numbers provides inspiration to students, established scholars, and anyone inside or outside rhetorical studies who might be interested in exploring the intersections between the two disciplines.
