Foes Unite in Tribute at Chicago Mayor's Funeral
''He loved people - black, white, brown, red, green, whatever color,'' said the Rev. B. Herbert Martin, the late Mayor's parish pastor. ''And for those whose backs were pressed against the wall, Harold always had a word of hope.'' ''Harold won against the odds,'' said the Rev. Jesse Jackson. ''We'll miss you, buddy. Because of you, dreams became reality.'' In the front rows, eight of the Mayor's brothers and sisters sat with his longtime fiancee, Mary Ella Smith. During the service, his half-brother Raymond Price described Mr. [Harold Washington] as ''a giant tree, symbol of courage and strength,'' who had given refuge and shelter ''to the birds who soared and sang'' in its branches.
