12. Mathematical modelling: a key to control of infectious diseases in man and animals McLean AR, Anderson RM. Epidemiol Infect 1988; 100: 419–442
2005
Predicting the impact of infectious diseases on the well-being of the community is a cornerstone of identifying effective prevention, control and support. One only has to reflect on the last few years in the United Kingdom to see the impact mathematical modelling has had on public and government, with controversy around the likely numbers of sufferers from new-variant Creutzfeld–Jakob disease, human immunodeficiency virus, and continuing debate as to whether to use vaccine to support control of foot-and-mouth disease. Over the last 20–25 years, Epidemiology and Infection, and before it the Journal of Hygiene, have published many of the sentinel papers in the mathematical modelling of infectious disease, both in humans and animals. The discipline has advanced from relatively simple analyses to the most complex assessments whose underlying mathematics and statistics almost certainly exceed the comprehension of all but a few microbiologists and public health specialists. The depth of the analysis does not obscure the key messages, however, for the epidemiology of infectious disease and its control, and a Special Article in the journal in 1988 overviewed its contribution [1].

The fallacy behind U.S. tax holidays
2011
Most temporary tax holidays \"reward people for what they are going to do anyway,\" he said, adding that \"the bang for the buck is very low; you're subsidizing companies that were already going to hire.\" \"If Congress enacts a second tax holiday, rational corporate executives will conclude that more tax holidays are likely in the future,\" Chuck Marr and Brian Highsmith of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington recently wrote. \"That will make corporations more inclined to shift income into tax havens and less likely to make investments in the United States.\" Again, there is that little problem with demand. \"Every C.E.O. and C.F.O. will tell you they will only hire when they are confident they can get sales,\" Mr. [Howard Gleckman] said. \"They say to themselves, 'How much can we sell with the workers we have?\"'

1996
[R. McLean] asks why, first, must we ascertain what an intruder is doing. Surely this is commonsense. How would R. McLean feel if they killed or seriously injured someone who had wandered into their home completely innocently. And as for shooting or attacking someone from behind as they are retreating, this would have to be one of the most cowardly acts a person could commit. The law clearly states you may use reasonable force to defend yourself or apprehend someone.

MET-ED REQUESTS RATE HIKE COMPANY CITES HIGHER ENERGY COSTS
1987
The higher energy cost rate request, made by Met-Ed yesterday, will be considered along with requests to lower the base rate and state tax surcharge portions of bills, said R. Bruce McLean, a Met- Ed spokesman. The energy cost rate is based solely on the cost of fuel used to generate electricity at Met-Ed's generating stations and power purchased from other sources. If costs are higher than projected, the company is permitted to request recovering the actual costs. McLean said the major reasons for the proposed increase are higher fuel and purchased power costs that reflect higher customer usage. Plans for maintenance work at Three Mile Island's Unit 1 nuclear plant in mid-1988 also contributed to the proposed increase, he said.
